the cottage,

This review is from: The Cottage (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book by Gerri Hill.It is both happy and sad and full of compassion dealing with the emotions of two women who meet in middle life. Gerri Hill is a great writer on so may subjects. This book will probably bring may tears but also bring such happiness to two women.

To Love and Lose?,
By C. Mahoney - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Cottage (Paperback)
I want to start off by saying that I love Gerri Hill. The Cottage however, was not one of my favorite books by this wonderful writer. It was a book full of the question "Is it better to love and lose or never love at all?" It is a sad book in my opinion and if you are wanting a tear jerker, this book will do just fine! It is well written and the characters are very well developed but bottom line, this book is just depressing. I am not a big fan of knowing pretty much where a book is heading in the first chapter and I thought this book was predictable. Hill will remain one of my favorite authors but, The Cottage just didn't do it for me this time around.

Something different,

This book does not follow the usual lesbian romance formula (girl meets girl, they go through some trials, tribulations, a few misunderstandings and then live happily ever after). I am a voracious reader of lesbian fiction and have read all of Gerri Hill's books. This book excels because of its' difference from the rest (a difference that I thought would make me NOT want to read it and surely NOT enjoy it). But I read The Cottage in one sitting...three hours and several tears later, I realized that this was the best book I'd read in while. It is beautifully written, touching and sad, yet joyous at the same time. I recommend this book to every fan of lesbian fiction.

A Day in the Life,
By K. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Cottage (Paperback)
I am a huge fan of Gerri Hill. I own every one of her books and have enjoyed all of them at least twice. When I read the description of this book, I was a little skeptical because it described two married women meeting and having a relationship. I'm not terribly fond of stories about infidelity, but this is a Hill book so I decided to give it a chance.Jill and Carrie meet at the park while Jill is on her lunch break and Carrie is painting landscapes. Over time, they become aware of their shared feelings and develop a passionate relationship. Of course, they have to juggle their real lives, husbands, etc., to be together. The only problem with the book is that, outside of the affair, nothing much really happens. It is more like "a day (more like a few months) in the life" of these two women. There is no story other than their falling in love. (I won't spoil it by telling you what happens in the last few chapters.) The story is well-told and enjoyable, but it's not Hill's typical great story. It lacks dimension, but has a distinct beginning and end. The book is more like a long short-story than a short novel. I'm glad I took a chance on it, but hope Hill's next book is more like her others. |
