Product Description

From Mamoru Oshii, the world-acclaimed director of Ghost in the Shell, comes an award-winning story of an exciting but endless war with heroes too young to understand the meaning of their battles.

A group of eternally young fighter pilots known as Kildren experience the sudden loss of innocence as they battle the enemy in astonishing dogfights above the clouds. With his only childhood memory consisting of intense flight training, the fearless teenage pilot Yuichi's dogfights coexist with his struggle to find his missing past. When his beautiful, young female commander Suito is reluctant to discuss the fate of the pilot that Yuichi is replacing -- or the strangely perfect condition of that pilot's former aircraft -- Yuichi's curiosity becomes heightened.

There are parts of this that are great and parts that made me want to hit the fast forward button on the remote. Overall, the story is interesting in what it implies but never says until later in the show, however, by that time I felt ho-hum about it and the final "revelation". It was something I had already guessed.

The parts that involved the flying was great but the parts on the ground were draggy and played out too long, hence the final ho-hum I felt. I liked this but I much preferred "Last Exile" and "Yukikaze" both had the angst but were less drawn out. So, if you like a slow pace type show with some flight action then this is for you. If you prefer something more exciting and on the edge of your seat then I'd tell you to pass it by.

Gets a 3 stars out of 5 from me. Those three were for the interesting idea behind the characters, some neat plane designs, and some nice air action but loses two stars because the story just took a bit too long at times.

No doubt this is another creation from the director of the original Ghost in the shell movie series, even the name of the female main character is identical to his previous productions. If you look at the dog fight scenes of the planes, you won't believe your own eyes. The pain staking details of reflections, colors and shadows are like the team has spent thousands of hours to perfect the final products. However, the storyline has left something to be desired. I guess the problem is this movie was based on a rather lengthy novel, Sky Crawlers is only part of the novel series. Therefore, I had difficulty to understand the true intention of the director on presenting this rather excellent animation. If you love Ghost in the shell series, this is a must buy!

This is an adult movie. My kids like the aviation scenes but the slow pace doesn't keep their attention. I'm a former pilot the aviation scenes are very accurate. The soundtrack is exceptional. An old friend, now deceased, was a RAF pilot in WWII. He told me that air battles were over in a matter of seconds; this is accurately portrayed in the movie. Being caught by a Messerschmitt or a Falkwolf meant death. They would hand around the airport, chain smoking, waiting to go up again knowing that they could may not come back. This is also portrayed in the movie. I must commend Manoru Oshii for being so bold as to produce a movie like this; it could not be made in North America.

While technically very well done, this was not what I thought it might be - an action manga-kind of movie with deep undertones. Rather I ended up falling asleep to the continual dialogue about not much whatsoever.
I suppose if you're a real fan of this Oshii fellow you'll like it, but for the casual viewer I would suggest browsing other products.

It was a slow moving film. More talking then action. So don't expect an action movie. I just couldn't really understand what the movie was about. along with my 16 year old nephew and 15 year old niece. I really don't know what to say about it. That's just me. Maybe you might get it?
