Rome, 1952- José María is-like Europe itself-struggling to recover from the chaotic and character-defining events that transpired during the previous fifteen years, events that haunt him still. He and his wife, Montse, attempt not to dwell on their past, until the day they read about a mysterious death by decapitation of an old acquaintance, and José María's memories come surging back. And so our narrator begins his tale... It is 1937, in the thick of the Spanish Civil War. José María and Montse are tw Or

Product Description

" An intricately plotted, compelling read that vividly conjures up the Rome of World War II."
-Juan G=mez-Jurado, author of God's Spy

" A narrative that combines the historical novel and the espionage thriller . . . a story whose stylistic and thematic beauty surpasses the expectations of even the most demanding of readers . . . a stunning work of fiction."
-ABC (Spain)

From the Back Cover

In 1937 a group of Spaniards are thrown together, forced to wait out the Spanish Civil War in Rome. Unlike the rest of his compatriots, José María has no strong feelings either way about the ideologies causing such bloodshed in his home country; it is only the beautiful and bookish Montse who ignites his passion. Unwittingly, they become embroiled in an underground Nazi plot to collect mystic artifacts. The most powerful artifact sought is the Creator's Map, a legendary document depicting the power centers of the universe, said to be penned by God himself. The idealistic Montse is recruited as a spy and becomes more and more deeply involved in espionage, as does José María, for his own reasons.

The Creator's Map brilliantly re-creates the dark intrigue, romantic entanglements, and divided loyalties of war-torn Europe. Long after the war is over, the destinies of these characters continue to be shaped by the devastating repercussions of this tumultuous time.

HASH(0x9a67e624) out of 5 stars Easy to read Jan. 22 2009

A complicated triangle during the fall of the fascist regime in Italy. If you liked books like The Da Vinci Code, The Last Cato: A Novel, ... you will find this book a nice addition. The style resembles Dan Brown: short chapters, you want to keep going and find out. There is a love story, an historical context, Rome, and a secret plot. It does not beat my favorite in this genre, The Shadow of the WindLa Sombra Del Viento/ the Shadow of the Wind (Autores Espanoles E Iberoamericanos) (Spanish Edition) by Zafon.

HASH(0x9913518c) out of 5 stars Educational and entertaining April 19 2013

It's hard to understand why this book is not more well known or more available. It has all the intrigue of The English Patient, the sensitivity of a love story and the author is skilled and smart. I love the Italian settings, the strong female character and the weaving of the actual events into a narrative. Again, I can't believe that I had never heard Emilio Calderon before reading this fabulous book.If nothing else it is a valuable
e history lesson, but it is such a pleasure to read and is the perfect length, not too long or too short.Highly recommended!
