Book Description

May 1 1998
Emmeline, the wife to a powerful guild master, needs to provide her aging husband with an heir. Forced to make harsh decisions, she pays her servant to go out and to pay a man for a night of 'service' that will leave her with the child she needs to give her husband. She knows nothing about the nameless man who takes up her offer. For coin, he will give her what she needs. However, instead of paying the man and them parting with little thought to what happened, she gets a night of passion that haunts her forever. She gets the child she bought...only life demands a higher payment ten years later. Niall fitzJulien is the new overlord of Castle Morlaix. To his shock, the woman who stands before him to pay homage holds the hand of his son--his ten-year-old son. He recalls that night a decade ago, when he'd awoken the next morning from a night of passion only to discover the woman had slipped away from his bed...and taken his heart. Now he sees how cruelly he was used, how he has been denied his son. No longer. Now she is his vassal, she serves him. A dark, strong tale of a Medieval woman who does what she must to survive, of the man she came to love, the man she must now face with her deceit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deauxville at her best! Sep 25 2004
By Deborah MacGillivray TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is may favourite Maggie David/Katherine Deauxville book and I am so shocked it is not reprinted!! Get with it people. This is one GREAT historical. I am sure there are many readers out there that would LOVE to read this wonderful book!!

Emmeline needs to provide her ageing husband with an heir, so she is forced to send her servant out to find a suitable 'stud' and pay him to impregnate her. The servant, instead, brings her a knight, but she must conceive this night so there is little choice. She wanted a faceless man, that would give her a child and fade away. Instead, she gets a night of passion that haunts her.

She slips away in the morning not knowing the wonderful Knight's name, leaving him the monies promised. Only, he did not want the money, he wanted her and was furious she left in the morn. He knew nothing about her, so he had no way to trace her.

But as life often does, the circle comes around and ten years later the new overload, Niall fitzJulien, to whom Emmaline, now widowed, must swear fealty in her son's name, is none other than the man who fathered him. She prays to get through the swearing without him figure out his own son stands before him. She is not so lucky and now must pay the piper.

I always wanted to write, and there are a few really good books out there that inspired me to follow that dream. This is one of the books.

There are a handful of really truly SPECIAL books, that linger on in your mind and your heart. No matter the years, they are still vivid, rich in details and never fade, almost as if they become a part of you.

Thank you, Maggie, for creating this VERY SPECIAL book that so touches the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars so much detail and emotion! April 5 2004
Format:Paperback
THis was a fabulous read. I really felt for the characters, their pains, their emotions and the sacrifices they each made in finding each other.

The historical details especially is what I miss so much in the current historical romances. This is so rich. When I want to read a historical - I want HISTORY to actually be there.

So thrilling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great historical detail, but.... Feb 20 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This relatively short paperback (317 pages) took me a long time to read, because it was so packed with historical details, which I savored. This was the first work I read of this author, and since I really enjoyed her humor and descriptive ability, I definitely plan to read more by Deauxville. She certainly researched this period, and wove in the details quite well. However, I found it difficult to relate to the main characters, Emmeline and fitzJulien. I disliked both of them, which is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. I wanted to tell them both to grow up and get over themselves. They seemed distant to one another, until the end. If we could give 1/2 stars I would give this book 4 1/2.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rich historical detail, well-written story, mediocre characters Jan 7 2009
By J. Wilson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Married to an old, affluent man who's head of the Guild, Emmeline needs an heir to secure her position. Because her husband is too old to give her a child, she sends a servant to pay a man to discreetly spend one night with her. Her servant finds Niall fitzJulian, a poor knight and they spend a passionate night together.

Years later, Emmeline is a wealthy widow with a son and a new lord of Castle Morlaix (in the town she lives in) is on his way. She hopes he has forgotten her as she gives him homage for the first time but things, unfortunately, don't go that way and she now has to deal with a cold, angry knight determined to make her pay.

I have read two books by this Deauxville and I absolutely love her work. Her attention to detail, ability to weave a compelling story, and knowledge of this time period make her one of the best authors I have come across in a long time. Unfortunately, this was not quite enough to save this story from two very unlikeable characters. Between Emmeline and Niall, i'd have to say that Niall wins as the more unlikeable character. On seeing Emmeline for the first time in years and laying eyes on their son, he first tries to strangle her. When he calms down, he next orders his men to empty her house in front of the whole village, having all of her gold and anything else of value moved to his castle saying it will be her dowry. Then he forces her to marry him by saying she will never see her son again if she refuses. After this we get about thirty pages of him humiliating and insulting her.

This story is set in medeival times and the hero's behavior may not be out of place but his animosity towards Emmeline seemed ridiculous. What did he have to be angry about? Not many women would have gone to the lengths to get a child that Emmeline did and i'm sure she would have been comdemmed for it, but from the way Niall was acting you would have thought he had been raped and that was not at all the case. He was approached in a completely forthright way and had every opportunity to decline.

That being said, The Crystal Heart is still a decent read. She provides a great snapshot into medeival life and she achieves this without making you feel like you are reading a history book. Her writing is top-notch and i would love to see more of her.
