Book Description

September 2000 1587218488 978-1587218484
Two groups of explorers are marooned on a desert planet. Unknown to each other, one group must survive the harsh rigors of primitive life by wit and aide of a powerful alien device. The other, fleeing intertia and despotism, makes an astounding discovery that plunges them into the heart of an inner war. It is the story of the begining of myth and civilization, of the human heart and its struggle for survival between two dimensions, the interior and the exterior, that we by nature straddle, and the unavoidable consequences of choice.

From the Publisher

"We are pleased to offer this dynamic novel through 1st Books Library," says President Tim Jacobs. "It has a fresh and insightful story to tell, and we believe it is well worth the readers attention."

From the Author

This story began as a riveting dream/nightmare. It developed between 1985 to the present from a short story to a novel. I dedicate it to my parents, whose life together exemplified love, and whose faith in me never wavered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first novel Nov 30 2001
By Sam Leith - Published on Amazon.com
I should confess an interest. I met the author once in a bar in Jemez Springs, New Mexico, and bought her book on the strength of our meeting. I can confess now I didn't have particularly high expectations of it but was curious to see the result of the years of dedication Bettyann had spent bringing to the page what started (literally, if I remember her right) as a dream.
I was utterly knocked out. It was thoughtful, compellingly plotted, thoroughly involving and with a real gift for originality of expression. I wolfed it in two days flat. Bettyann has been compared to Herbert or Heinlein but what it reminded me of more than anything else was Julian May's Saga of the Exiles, in terms of its range and scope and its scifi/fantasy blend. What shortcomings there are could be ironed out by the professional editor she undoubtedly deserves. This is a considerable talent in the raw.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Life for a Sleeping Genre Jan 23 2001
By Dan L Powell - Published on Amazon.com
after reading "THE CULLING DARK" by Betty Ann Craddock I was truly mesmerised by the intricacy and powerful story telling of this absolutely inspired author. This world is as complex as any Herbert or Heinlein world with a rich interplay between characters that literally keep you on the edge of your seat and crying out for more at the end. Please oh please publish the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars new mexico author leaps into the future and the past Dec 11 2000
By r. stanley moore - Published on Amazon.com
Northern New Mexico - Bettyann Craddock has painted a thousand pictures with her first science fiction novel , "The Culling Dark". Colorfull characters rivet this action filled story together in dramatic fashion . Surprising twists keep the plot interesting from chapter to chapter in this very beleivable tale of a group of explorers marooned on a planet which is not unlike our own desert-southwest. Struggle for survival is only half the story in this heart-wrenching drama that begs for a sequel . Watch for this book on the best sellers list in the sci-fi future . R.Stanley moore
