The Daichis: Earths Defense Family: V.1 Dysfunctional Heroes (ep.1-5) [Import]

The Daichi family may be the heroes of this outrageous sci-fi spoof, but it would be flattery to call them "dysfunctional." Dad's an obese nerd, Mom wants a divorce, and pint-sized Dai flips girls' skirts at school. Teenage Nozomi, who wants nothing to do with the others, is the most normal and least likable. Somehow, they're chosen to defend the Earth against invading aliens: They receive cards that enable them to transform into power-suited superheroes. Unfortunately, their salaries don't cover the optional powers needed to defeat the monsters, and the family sinks into debt. Daichis recalls numerous superhero parodies, but its tone is closer to South Park than to Dai-Guard or Dokkoida. Jokes about excrement, panties, and breasts constitute the stock-in-trade; viewers untroubled by bad taste and vulgarity will roar at this 2001 broadcast series. (Rated 13 and older: nudity, toilet humor, profanity, risqué humor, violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

There is real pain in this show. Everyone behaves badly and I wanted to strangle everyone at some point, but they have good reasons for their dysfunctional behaviour and unfortunately make things worse by taking out their issues on everyone else. The show actually plays more like a tragedy than a comedy in many cases. This family is dysfunctional in a way that is painful to watch which kills some of the humour. Unlike most shows like this The Daichis does not end with a happy family, with everyone having learned their lesson. If anything the family is even more dysfunctional at the end of the series and only held together by a wicked early termination penalty clause in their contract. However, by the end, they seem to have embraced the fact that they are a dysfunctional family forced to stay together and fight for earth and accepted it as their reality.
