Book Description

Jun 12 2012 Hangman's Daughter

1648, a small village in the Alps: In the thick of a blizzard, a town priest discovers he's been poisoned. As numbness creeps up his body, he summons the last of his strength and scratches a sign in the frost that will lead the town hangman, his daughter, and the town physician in pursuit of a treasure of the Knights Templar. But the priest's murderer is already on their trail, and he's not the only one after the legendary fortune: a dark monk is not far behind, and a band of thieves is roving the countryside, attacking solitary travelers and spreading panic. The race is on, and the stakes are high.

Delivering on the promise of his first book, Oliver Potzsch takes readers on a whirlwind tour through the occult hiding places of Bavaria's ancient monasteries, bringing to life the compassionate hangman who's destined to join the ranks of literature's most beloved characters.

Review

"If you enjoy an unlikely hero, look no further. The Dark Monk comes with three...In this subtle, meticulously crafted story, every word is a possible clue, and the characters are so engaging that it’s impossible not to get involved in trying to help them figure the riddle out."—Oprah.com

"Pötszch knows Germany in his bones." —NPR, On Point

"[A] rousing sequel."

Chicago Tribune

"Swift and sure, compelling as any conspiracy theory, persuasive as any spasm of paranoia, The Dark Monk grips you at the base of your skull and doesn't let go."
—Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked and Out of Oz

"Oliver Pötzsch takes readers on a darkly atmospheric visit to seventeenth-century Bavaria in his latest adventure. With enough mystery and intrigue to satisfy those who like gritty historical fiction, The Dark Monk has convincing characters, rip-roaring action, and finely-drawn settings."
—Deborah Harkness, author of A Discovery of Witches and the forthcoming Shadow of Night

"Weaving together the mystery of a murdered priest, a Templar treasure, and a kind-hearted hangman, Oliver Pötzsch's The Dark Monk is a labyrinth of clues and rich characters in seventeenth-century Bavaria. Pötzsch keeps the action boiling, the clues intriguing, and the history fascinating and authentic."
—William Dietrich, author of The Emerald Storm

"Pötzsch does an excellent job of plunking the reader down in seventeenth-century Germany ... Readers will also appreciate the nice balance between drama, suspense, and humor: this is a serious story, Pötzsch seems to be saying, but it’s OK to have some fun with it. At least two more books in the series are forthcoming, and they will be most welcome."

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome adventure Aug 22 2012
By Roy
Format:Paperback
I majored in history when I was in college. This book is really awesome. It is kind a history fiction and adventure genre. If you read this book, you're gonna understand why I really like this book. This book is well written. Meticulous plot, fun, suspence, well-depicted protagonists, the gritty fiction of medieval time. I became a fan of Oliver Potzsch!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Templer's (stifle a yawn) Treasures April 27 2013
By Dave and Joe TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I bought this book on the strength of the last book - which was a terrific read. This time out I struggled through the book because I am absolutely, completely, finished with books about the Templars and the clues they left behind that leads to great treasure. These books always have a bunch of unsolvable clues (that paradoxically get solved relatively easily) and each clue leads to further danger ... the treasure is never what it seems - need I go on. I finished the book because: a) that's what I do when I start one; b)I do like the characters and c)the book is engaginly written. I'll give the series another shot but my faith in the series has been shaken. Predictable book, major plot twist is given away early in the book, strong characters make the whole thing endurable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and Entertaining read Mar 11 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I truly enjoyed all three books in this series including The Dark Monk. The style and story are entertaining and engaging. It's a detective page-turner as well as a great historical novel full of real historical facts and places. I also appreciated author's suggestions on visiting his native historical town of Regensburg. This book is a good companion for travel or other leasure reading.
I am waiting for the fourth book which should come out this July!
