School and public libraries will want to add the new version of The Dark to their collections, but they should not discard the original Suomalainen-illustrated rendition, for language arts and art classes could be enlivened through a comparison of the two editions. Highly recommended. (Dave Jenkinson Canadian Materials 1997-10-31)

5.0 out of 5 stars Slightly creepy but great Oct. 14 2010

Yet another classic children's story with fresh ideas proving that Robert Munsch can do no wrong.
In this story, a young girl opens up an otherwise empty cookie jar to discover that a Dark is hiding out at the bottom of it. When the Dark falls out onto the kitchen floor, it begins eating shadows, growing larger with each shadow, until it eventually eats all the shadows in the neighborhood and rests atop the young girl's house. The girl eventually finds a shadow the Dark failed to eat and uses this to entice the Dark into a trap, thus saving the day for all affected!
The story is simple, straightforward, yet highly intriguing for adults and children alike. The illustrations are classic Martchenko- colorful, vivid, moving the story along, filled with details that kids love to study. Younger kids can be a little intimidated by the Dark when it first appears, but the light tone throughout prevents the story from becoming outright scary.
Another winner for the incomparable Munsch/Martchenko duo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love at first sight. March 24 2009

I love this book! This was our first introduction to Robert Munsch and it was love at first sight. The story is easy to follow, repetitive enough for young children to follow along, and as creative as Robert Munsch is known to be. Great book!

Great experience with the purchase of this book. The book itself was loved by the children in my daycare. It fit into a science lesson we had on the sun as it explains shaddows. Immediately after I read the book the children shouted to read it again!

I have most of Robert Munsch's books, but didn't have this one. It's a cute story, with winning illustrations, but doesn't have the high comedy of some of his other books. I read it to my 7-year-old recently, and though we didn't laugh hysterically, she enjoyed it nonetheless. It's definitely worth putting in your Munsch collection!
