4.0 out of 5 stars Some problems-but overall an engrossing read, May 1 2006

This review is from: Dawn Stag (Hardcover)
After finishing the White Mare I was extremely eager to read its sequel, the Dawn Stag. But I had to wait a week because of slow shipping and that gave me some perspective on the book I wouldn't have otherwise had.

The Dawn Stag is a continuation of the Alban's fight for freedom against the encouraging Roman army. It's one heck of a book, complete with battle scenes, sex scenes and tragedy galore. Like its predecessor it's a bit of a soap opera-no one could have the drama that these people have in their lives. But it is engrossing and entertaining. I liked it a lot, but there some problems.

The author admits to changing history, culture and many things of the time period to suit her story. That's fine-but I couldn't tell what was fake and what was real. This could be called a mark of good writing, but in the long run it's confusing to the reader.

And, in its soap opera fashion, the drama between the characters gets a little tiresome. Weirdly its more tiresome when they aren't having person problems than when they are. Sometimes it takes away from the story to have so much drama in the "home" of the novel.

In the long run I enjoyed this immensely-though it did make me cry. I also emailed the author to get answers to my burning questions about the third book-which if you know something about Scottish/Roman relations you'll know the setting of. If you want that information I will email it to you-but putting it here would be a spoiler for this book.

Four stars-blurring the line of fantasy and historical fiction so completly doesn't help this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another successful installment., Feb 21 2006

This review is from: The Dawn Stag (Dalriada, Book 2) (Hardcover)
This second part of the triology was just as riveting - if not more - than the first. The plot is intricately woven and the characters are even more played out in all their complexities, so much that once can't help but become attached to them. I could not put this book down, as there was not a dull moment. The rich historical backdrop combined with the romance, magic and intrigue make this novel another success for Jules Watson. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing.......Truly Captivating, Oct 7 2007

This review is from: Dalriada Trilogy 02 Dawn Stag (Paperback)
This story captured me from page one, book one. I loved every minute of this second book in the Dalriada Trilogy. Rhiann and Eremon are incredible lead characters and have worked their way in to my hearts. This story will remain with me long after others are forgotten.

The ending was not at all what I wanted, but makes the story as a whole no less poignant. The tragedy of the ending is believable, but their lives from that point on pale drastically in comparison to the grandeur of their previous roles in society. I wanted to fall to my knees and scream at the injustice of it all!

I am hoping for that justice, and clarity in the Mother's intricate plan, in book 3, The Boar Stone.
