Bad 60s SF movie, really bad DVD, May 21 2008
I have a soft-spot for bad movies, and I've been meaning to watch this one for quite a while; I picked up this DVD to fill out an order because it was cheap (and I'm not aware of any other DVD currently available), and now I understand why it's cheap.
The movie itself takes Wyndham's story and turns it into a predictable rubber monster show, repeatedly switching between the main characters and scenes of a couple of people in a lighthouse which were apparently shot as an afterthought to pad out the running time; while the plot they used does bear some resemblance to the novel, it doesn't make much sense. That said, it's a moderately entertaining bad SF movie of the 60s, and I didn't expect much more of it.
What lets it down is the awful DVD. While it is at least widescreen -- though not anamorphic -- it's clearly mastered from an analogue video tape that's barely above VHS quality, taken from a print that has scratchy audio, plenty of dust, and is seriously faded for one sequence of a couple of minutes. But that's not the worst part; while the first three quarters of the movie are quite watchable, the last quarter only has audio on the right-hand stereo track, so if your DVD player is plugged into a mono TV... YOU GET NO SOUND AT ALL FOR THE LAST QUARTER OF THE MOVIE. Even if you do have stereo (or better), you only get sound on the right speaker(s), which is obviously very distracting.
Clearly the company have spared every expense in the production of the DVD, because they could have solved that by the simple expedient of copying the right-hand audio track onto the left for the last few scenes, which would at least give you a consistent mono output. About the only redeeming feature is that some of the trailers and other 'features' on the disk are somewhat entertaining.
If you're a fan of the movie, I really can't recommend buying this DVD; it's better than nothing, but because of the sound problems, it's only a little better than nothing. And if you're not a fan of the movie but would like to see an adaption of the novel, get the BBC TV miniseries, which is vastly superior in almost every respect.

The end of the world!, Sep 26 2010
Wow, alien plants that spit poison and kill?! The whole world gone blind?! Just a few hard luck survivors?!
What more could you want!
I actually saw this movie when I was a little kid, probably wouldn't be allowed in the theater at that age these days!
Of course, this movie is quite tame by today's standards, people that can't escape a tree walking at 2 miles an hour...? OK it's pretty funny at times, buy hey, this was the 50s!
Other parts of the movie are pretty sad, and some parts stupid, but for it's time it was OK.
Compared to lots of other 50s sci-fi, it's actually pretty good!
If you like the old 50s stuff, this is a classic!

Movie made twice - this is the bad version, Jun 19 2003
Two movies were made based on Wyndham's wonderful book. This is the pitiful one. This movie bears virtually no relationship to the book with a radically changed (and ruined) plot.
If you can find the OTHER version, buy it -- quite good.
Keywords for the bad version - made in 1963, Howard Keel, sailor and lighthouse.
