Ryan certainly knows how to write 'good' zombies as realistic and menacing as they can get british Fantasy Society --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Book Description

Gabry lives a quiet life. As safe a life as is possible in a town trapped between a forest and the ocean, in a world teeming with the dead, who constantly hunger for those still living. She’s content on her side of the Barrier, happy to let her friends dream of the Dark City up the coast while she watches from the top of her lighthouse. But there are threats the Barrier cannot hold back. Threats like the secrets Gabry’s mother thought she left behind when she escaped from the Sisterhood and the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Like the cult of religious zealots who worship the dead. Like the stranger from the forest who seems to know Gabry. And suddenly, everything is changing. One reckless moment, and half of Gabry’s generation is dead, the other half imprisoned. Now Gabry only knows one thing: she must face the forest of her mother’s past in order to save herself and the one she loves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, Jan 26 2010
This review is from: The Dead-Tossed Waves (Hardcover)
Gabry has lived with her mother in the lighthouse for years. She is content with her friends, her quiet world, and dreaming of life in the Dark City where people enjoy more comforts than she is used to.

Gabry's friends are more adventurous than she is. They like to sneak out of town and explore the unsafe areas where Mudo roam. They particular enjoy going to the abandoned and dangerous amusement park on the other side of the fence. Gabry doesn't want to go where the Mudo wander - she wants to stay safe, but Catcher is going and she wants to be with him. The thought of spending time with Catcher alone and in the dark overpowers her thoughts of safety.

Gabry's trip to the amusement part quickly turns into a disaster. She is forced to grow up fast with very little information. The little she learns from her mother sends her on the biggest adventure of her life. One she never even considered a possibility. The only thing that keeps her going is the desire to learn the truth about her family and save the people she loves.

My first reaction when I started reading THE DEAD-TOSSED WAVES was disappointment. I wanted more about Mary. Also, there were several times when Gabry got on my nerves.

But, after thinking about the book for a while, I have come to the conclusion that continuing the story of the people surviving life among the Unconsecrated/Mudo several years after THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH was okay. How much more could we have seen Mary do? She'd already survived the trip through the forest and found the ocean. What could she do that was more exciting than that? Plus, Gabry provides a whole new perspective on life after the Return.

I now can't wait to read the third novel in this wonderful series. Keep up the good work, Ms. Ryan.

This review is from: The Dead-Tossed Waves (Paperback)
The Dead Tossed Waves did not pick up where the first one had left off, but instead was the story of Mary's daughter, Gabry. Gabry is such a different person than her mother, and it quite content never to leave the town of Vista where she lives, never to cross the Barrier into the unknown. She does not thirst for what she doesn't have, unlike her mother at the same age, but finds she wants what might have been, looking to the time before the Return (when the zombies took over) or even before the fateful night when her entire life changed.

Some great themes were examined in this book, such as what it means to live and what makes humans different from Mudo (zombies) and the value of remembering or forgetting the past. I also like how Ryan plays with the idea that nothing is black or white, but there are shades of grey; however, Gabry, being a teenager, has trouble with this and her struggle feels authentic.

The story is told from Gabry's first person present point of view and is quite introspective. Gabry analyzes everything and goes over and over what she thinks went wrong in her life and what it is she thinks she wants. Sometimes I found this to be a bit much and made me feel frustrated with Gabry at times. I also felt that Gabry bordered on repetitive at times in her thoughts about the past and what she had done.

There is a love triangle in this book, though it is different from many others I have read. It gets caught up in some of the philosophical themes of the book, such as what it means to be human and remembering the past but moving to the future. Both boys are sympathetic and likable in their own ways and I enjoy how Ryan does not use the typical love triangle romance I have read in many other books.

The number of sentence fragments was distracting for me, making the writing abrupt and hard to follow at times. However, I did enjoy Ryan's writing overall, especially her descriptions - they were so vivid and fun. There are also lots of cliffhanger chapter endings which make the reader want to keep reading. The book was full of great plot twists and lots of excitement. Everything in the book goes from bad to worse, to worse, then worse again. Ryan sure knows how to torture her characters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead Tossed Waves, July 19 2010

This review is from: The Dead-Tossed Waves (Hardcover)
Garby lives a quiet life in the lighthouse with her mother on the outskirts of the forest. While she is completely content with the borders that surround her life, her friends yearn for something more. However, when they all slip behind the boundary wall for a little fun, everything changes, and too much is lost. In order to protect those she loves, Garby must face her fears and enter the forest of her mother's past, the forest of Hands and Teeth. A story of adventure, loss, strength, family and love. Oh and zombies.

The Dead-Tossed Waves is a brilliant sequel to the dystopian novel The Forest of Hands and Teeth. While I did thoroughly enjoy Forest, I felt that Dead Tossed Waves was even better, it showed Ryan's growth in writing and I thought it was wonderful. Once again this is a fast paced suspense novel, with a lot more action and developing plot than the first book. I thought Ryan did a much better job of maintaining pacing and keeping the reader engaged. I really liked that the story moved forward a generation, making the books so much more about the world Ryan created than just the characters. Ryan does a great job at mixing new elements with storylines from the past and readers will no doubt be captivated by the love triangle. Without giving anything away, I really liked the direction of this novel, especially the opportunities set by the ending and I can't wait for the third book. I definitely recommend this book to those who like an exciting read.
