All of Twain's humor but without the anger Feb. 27 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Machado de Assis was a literary master, and it comes through in this collection of tales. "The Devil's Church" has a biting wit every good as Mark Twain's, and without the tinge of religious hatred that Twain exhibited in his later writings. "The Hidden Reason" is probably the finest short story ever printed; it easily surpasses the best American short stories, and is a cut about the English and French. Read this book!

Great way to further know Machado Aug. 19 2013
By jdq - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I stumbled across "The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas" in the private library of an apartment sublet and became smitten with Machado de Assis. I quickly bought his other main novels (Dom Casmurro, Quincas Borba) and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I tell everyone I meet to read them, though I think neither friend nor enemy has as yet done so. If you HAVE done so, then I recommend the book, as a way to better come to know our friend Machado. If you have not done so, apply a poultice to your head and rush to purchase your very own copy of "The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas" (aka "epitaph of a small winner").

The book delivered was an ex-library book, which was not disclosed. Still at the price I paid it was o.k.
