Book Description

May 24 2012 Gun Digest Book of the Ar 15

You wouldn't do this to your AR, but Sweeney did it here!

With manufacturers branching out into nontraditional calibers, and continual advances in optics, ammo and associated gear for the AR-15, Gun Digest Book of The AR-15, Volume IV brings you up-to-date on the latest developments in the AR industry, including chapters on:

  • .223 vs. 5.56: What's the problem?
  • Various .300s of the smaller-than-.308 size
  • Wilson 7.62X40
  • The .17 HMR, ADCOR DI carbine, and SIG 516
  • DelTon and Stag Arms? Oh yes.
Plus, author Patrick Sweeney hits the range and subjects these guns to some serious testing. To find out just how much abuse they can withstand, he:
  • Buried them in dirt and sand
  • Submerged them in water
  • Dropped them from heights
  • Ran them over with trucks
  • Froze them
  • Blasted them with a shotgun
And then he fired them, documenting the entire process in photos!

Kick back and watch in horror as events unfold—and find out which guns survive the torture.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing July 25 2012
By Stephen H. Poor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the fourth and the least-good of Sweeney's AR-15 volumes. While it does contain some useful information, it is not as well-written and insightful as his other books. He seems to have run out of things to say about the AR-15.

There is a LOT of material on the now-popular .300-cal subsonic offerings (.300 Whisper, .300 AAC Blackout, etc). If you are interested in these cartridges, this book will make an entertaining read.

There is some good new information about magazines, and also a very interesting section on the rifle's gas rings. There is a whole host of abusive testing, designed to prove. . . well I can't figure out what Sweeney was going for. He spent a lot of time and money torturing rifles, but I'm not sure what he accomplished. He broke things and ruined perfectly good guns, and he did show how reliable and durable an AR can be, but I don't know that this was really useful information, or deserved so much space in the book. There was also a chapter regarding how quickly rifles heat up and cool off in firing. I couldn't make heads or tails of most of the data in the charts, and in any event I'm not sure what the data is useful for. Again, a big waste of time and ammunition, not to mention ink and paper.

I have generally enjoyed Sweeney's writing, but I think he is out of ideas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too much of a good thing May 23 2012
By Richard J. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As always Patrick Sweeney's books are interesting and well written with a touch of humor. For such a simple gun I think the topic is running dry with four volumes and gunsmithing the AR-15 he's covered pretty much everything that can be covered. I noticed throughout this book that much of the material I had already read in various magazine articles over the last year, especially pages 121-197. It's a good book but if you don't already have the rest you're better off buying volume 2 or Gunsmithing the AR-15. I give it a 3.5
4.0 out of 5 stars Sweeney's book is 4th in this series May 24 2013

I like Sweeney's writing on ARs & reasonable critique of products. One article tests various brands of ARs durability after being abused. It may seem over the top for those of us who treat our weapons with love!
