Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9–When his family moves to Colorado to care for his ailing grandfather, Aidan thinks his life is ruined until he discovers three ancient scrolls in the man's basement. They tell of a world where the knights of Alleble fight to keep the warriors of Paragory from gaining dominion over the Realm. When Aidan reads the last line of the scrolls, Believe and enter, he is swept into this strange land. His role there is to become the 12th knight of the King's Elder Guard. Their mission is to travel to the kingdom of Mithegard and convince its sovereign not to sign a treaty with Paragory. Aidan discovers that the people in the Realm, called Glimpses, have doubles that exist in his world. A map of the Realm is provided, as is a character guide with pronunciation key. The concept in this first of a projected trilogy is intriguing and the plot moves along at a steady pace. Some characters lack development, but several of them are engaging, especially the swordmaiden Gwenne and an underground serpentine creature named Falon. Give this title to readers who have finished the current book in D. J. MacHale's Pendragon series (S & S) but who might not be ready for J. R. R. Tolkien or David Eddings's Belgariad books (Ballantine).–Lisa Prolman, Greenfield Public Library, MA

From Booklist

Gr. 4-7. The first in a projected trilogy begins in Aidan Thomas' new home; his family has moved to help his ailing grandfather. Aidan is unhappy about almost everything, but life really turns upside down when he discovers several ancient scrolls in his grandfather's basement. In short order, he finds himself opening "the door within"; on the opposite side is a world of noble kings and treacherous knights, and the inevitable struggle between good and evil. In the frame story about sacrifice and redemption, Batson has borrowed from C. S. Lewis, but the book's Christian overtones are not nearly as well woven as those in Lewis' work. There's plenty of fantastical adventure tethered to right and wrong here, and Aidan is a likable enough hero, though he seems more like a boy of 11 or 12 than the high-school kid he is. The writing is often workmanlike, but many readers will want the book for its religious core. Ilene Cooper

4.0 out of 5 stars My Review, April 7 2012
This review is from: The Door Within: The Door Within Trilogy - Book One (Paperback)
This book was amazing! It had an allegoracal meaning that was easy to understand.

The book starts off with Aidan moving to Colarado. It's a long move from Maryland, and he misses his friend Robby. Robby was different; he accepted Aidan when no one else did. As he is preparing to move with his parents, and when as he is adjusting to live in his new house, Adian has this anger to his grandfather, whom everyone calls Grampin. The move to Colarado is because of his grandfather, who is to stubbon to move to a retairment home, and is to ill to live alone. His parents agreed to move in with Grampin, and to care for him untill other arrangments could be made.

Shortly after Aidan moves, he goes down to his Grampin's basement, which had always mysteriously had multiple locks on it. He eventually goes down, into the basement, and notices the basement was very dark. All of a sudden the lamp turns on. And shortly after that, vases appear in the basement with scrolls in them. Adian grabs the scrolls and runs up the stairs. The scrolls he reads are similar to when God sends Jesus down to Earth and Jesus dies for everyone's sins, from the Bible. Aidan tells his parents and his grandfather, only to find out that his parents think he's joking, and his grandfather believes him. This is when Aidan starts to like Grampin a bit better because he believes him. Aidan's father tells Aidan, after looking at the scrolls for proof, that it's just a story and it's sold in bookstores everywhere. But Aidan doesn't believe his father. He later asks his grandfather for advice. His grandfather says that he has to believe in this story to truly get the answer. Grampin says that you can't just chant to yourself "I believe, I believe etc" (which Aidan tried doing:) you have to understand this is real, this story happened and what happened is true. Aidan belives and finds himself in the Kingdom of Alleble, where the scrolls take place.

When Adian does this, he is not in a flashback, or in dream, he is truly there, life on Earth is still happening. While Aidan is there, he has many questions, which many of them are answered, he meets many new people, he unravles many mysteries, and he eventually meets the King of Alleble himself! King Alleble is similar to God and Jeusus, from the Bible, and helps Aidan with his troubles on Earth and in Alleble.

At the end of the book, it ends in a sort of a cliffhanger, so you want to have to keep reading to fully understand the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Door Within -- A Must Read!, Feb 13 2012
This review is from: The Door Within: The Door Within Trilogy - Book One (Paperback)
The Door Within is a must read. It was my introduction to fantasy. I have to say I am a little biased towards it because of that. Even so, it was an amazing book, and it is one of my all time favourites.

Aidan Thomas doesn't really fit in. He has no real friends until he meets Robby. Robby is a super popular sports star, and he looks the part of it too. For some reason, Robby becomes friends with Aidan. But then, Aidan moves across the country to take care of his grandfather. There are no kids his age near where he lives, and soon Aidan has mastered all his video games. But then one day in his grandfather's basement, Aidan finds some scrolls. These scrolls take him on an adventure of a lifetime, to a land with knights and dragons. Aidan is given an important role there, but will he live up to it?

This was a really good book. The plot was full of twists and turns and you never knew what would happen next. The characters seem to come alive and you find yourself laughing with them, crying with them, worried for them, happy for them, and much more. The story was done believably, and there was never a dull moment. Wayne Thomas Batson takes someone traveling to a different world (something that's been fairly unoriginal since C.S. Lewis did it in "The Chronicles of Narnia") to a whole new level. He does it in such a way that is new and fresh, and in a way that people have never really seen it before. After all, I think having a twin in another realm would be pretty cool.
Full of Christian morals, suspense, action and adventure, it is one of the most amazing books you'll ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Door Within, Mar 22 2006
The Door Within is a wonderful novel. It has a complex and enticing plot yet is an easy read, unlike some Fantasy novels. The desciption used makes everything appear before you. It has wonderful characters and surprising twists, although sometimes you know something is going to happen and it just makes you want to start jumping up and down just because you wish the main character, young Aidan, could see what you can.
The story starts out in our own Maryland, USA with Aidan being antagonised by his recent move across the country so that his family could take care of his elderly grandfather, but soon things change drastically for him when he finds himself in The Realm.
The story has a bit of something for everyone, I think.
It may seem as though it is just another fantasy story like nearly every other, but don't be fooled and just give it a chance. It is certainly unique.
The Door Within is a wonderful page-turner with an end that left me wishing I had the second AND third novels sitting with me. I recommend everyone give it a try.
