Book Description

Mar 8 2011
The delightful new installment in Alexander McCall Smith's beloved and bestselling series finds Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi travelling to the north of Botswana, to the stunning Okavango Delta, to visit a safari lodge where there have been several unexplained and troubling events — including the demise of one of the guests.

When the two ladies of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency arrive at the Okavango Delta, their eyes are opened, as if for the first time, to the natural beauty and wildlife of their homeland. With teeming wildlife, endless grasslands, and sparkling rivulets of water running in every direction, it is breathtaking. But they can't help being drawn into a world filled with other wildlife: rival safari operators, discontented guides, grumpy hippopotamuses. On top of that, the date has still not been set for Mma Makutsi and Phuti Radiphuti's wedding, and it's safe to say that Mma Makutsi is beginning to grow a bit impatient.

And to top it all off, the impossible has happened: one of Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni's apprentices has gotten married…. Of course none of this defeats the indomitable Precious Ramotswe. Good sense, kindness, and copious quantities of red bush tea carry the day &- as they always do.

Review

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

"The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency mysteries remain his best-written and most consistently satisfying works. The Double Comfort Safari Club gives readers a chance to check in on the more compassionate, reflective world of the house on Zebra Drive."
--The Christian Science Monitor

"What would summer be without a visit to Botswana and the private detective agency run by Precious Ramotswe? The point of these books . . . is not to uncover mysteries, at least not directly, but rather, discuss the vagaries of the human heart and what makes people tick."
--Ottawa Citizen

"Like clove oil on a bad tooth, McCall Smith's fiction acts on cynicism as an effective, old-fashioned balm."
--The Globe and Mail

"McCall Smith's simple, sweet descriptions of everyday pleasures — a cup of tea, walking around one's garden — are enticing."
Boston Globe

"There is no end to the pleasure that may be extracted from these books."
The New York Times Book Review

"Put on the teakettle, find your place in the sun and settle in for a genteel journey."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Charming and Gentle Series Aug 15 2012
By Brett H TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The Double Comfort Safari Club is the 11th in the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, and like its predecessors it is a gentle and charming tale of life in Botswana. These books can be read and enjoyed on a standalone basis, but I think it is an advantage to have read them consecutively to see how the various relationships of the principal characters has evolved.

This time round Mma Romotswe has a couple of cases to exercise her skills. She has been contacted by an American attorney whose late client has left some money to someone in Botswana who was kind to her and the task is to track this person down. The other case concerns a couple who are known to Mma R, and who apparently each suspect the other of cheating.

I was fortunate to visit Botswana a few years ago, and this series does very much capture the pace of life and the general philosophical outlook of the populace which is considerably removed from what we are used to in the West. These are relatively short books and very easy to read. Most readers will quickly fall into the rhythm of these tales and will thoroughly enjoy them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Abridged version Dec 2 2010
Format:Audio CD
I ordered this item only to discover that it is abridged. This has happened to me before because the abridged /unabridged status of a recording is not always clearly indicated, AS IT SHOULD BE. I love this series and expect this book to be a good as the rest, but I want it in UNABRIDGED format.
