Review

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

"What would summer be without a visit to Botswana and the private detective agency run by Precious Ramotswe? The point of these books . . . is not to uncover mysteries, at least not directly, but rather, discuss the vagaries of the human heart and what makes people tick." Ottawa Citizen

"Like clove oil on a bad tooth, McCall Smith's fiction acts on cynicism as an effective, old-fashioned balm." The Globe and Mail

Praise for The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series:

"Utterly charming and compulsively readable." Newsweek

"Smart and sassy…[with] the power to amuse or shock or touch the heart, sometimes all at once." Los Angeles Times

I was pleased to be able to read this latest novel of Alexander McCall Smith, who makes the country of Botswana and its people, especially Precious, the No. Lady Detective, and her assistant, most appealing. Her philosphy and common sense are refreshing. I love all the regular characters, and I am always sorry get to the last page of each volume. Hope there are more of her adventures forthcoming.

Format: Paperback
The Double Comfort Safari Club is the 11th in the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, and like its predecessors it is a gentle and charming tale of life in Botswana. These books can be read and enjoyed on a standalone basis, but I think it is an advantage to have read them consecutively to see how the various relationships of the principal characters has evolved.

This time round Mma Romotswe has a couple of cases to exercise her skills. She has been contacted by an American attorney whose late client has left some money to someone in Botswana who was kind to her and the task is to track this person down. The other case concerns a couple who are known to Mma R, and who apparently each suspect the other of cheating.

I was fortunate to visit Botswana a few years ago, and this series does very much capture the pace of life and the general philosophical outlook of the populace which is considerably removed from what we are used to in the West. These are relatively short books and very easy to read. Most readers will quickly fall into the rhythm of these tales and will thoroughly enjoy them.

I ordered this item only to discover that it is abridged. This has happened to me before because the abridged /unabridged status of a recording is not always clearly indicated, AS IT SHOULD BE. I love this series and expect this book to be a good as the rest, but I want it in UNABRIDGED format.

The Double Comfort Safari club, like all volumes in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, glows with a warmth that I've been lucky enough to experience from a small handful of truly kind individuals. To my knowledge, no one has managed to capture that essence of soul-refreshing sweetness in book form like Alexander McCall Smith.

The stories are fairly simple. This is a character-driven series, not a plot-driven one. I look forward to each new book, not for the "mysteries" (which are lightweight and enjoyable), but for a chance to visit with old friends who warm my heart.

The latest book in this series is just as good as the others. Like a nice chat with a dear friend. The characters are believable with faults and failings and lovable quirks. If you are looking for rip roaring adventure this is not the book for you. If you are looking for an enjoyable read Precious Ramotswe will take you on an enjoyable trip of her home town to meet interesting characters with equally interesting problems which Mme Ramotswe helps them solve with a good helping of common sense and understanding of human nature.
