Book Description

Feb. 1 2012 Fallen Kings Cycle (Book 2)

Still reeling from plague and civil war, the Winter Kingdoms face an invasion force from across the Northern Sea led by a dark spirit mage in the name of ancient, vanquished gods. Summoner-King Martris Drayke and an untested generation of new rulers must stand against an unholy alliance of shadowy invaders. To prevail, Tris must win the uncertain support of the Dread, spirit-beings that stand guard within the sacred barrows over an even more fearsome threat imprisoned within. In the balance lies not only the freedom of the Winter Kingdoms but Tris's life and the soul of his young son, whose untested magic might be the biggest spoil of war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another terrific installment..... March 1 2012
By Robert A. Shippy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
....Please say this isn't the last we'll here about this amazing cast of characters. The book is the conclusion to the Fallen Kings Cycle. It's also the sixth book following the adventures and challenges of Tris Drayke, Kiara Sharsequin, Jonmarc and Carina Vahanian, and the rest of the amazing cast characters; but I'm still wanting more. Ms. Martin has created a fantastic world in the Winter Kingdoms. I like the pacing - not bogged down with too many details (enough to keep me wanting more) and not just a series of action-movie scenes. I liked this installment a lot, but was completely absorbed by the Jonmarc Vahanian and the vampires (vayash moru) subplots. I thought Tris had it too easy with all the amazing powers, while Jonmarc relied on skill and brains. Just my $0.02... Anyway, I would highly recommend this engaging, quick reads to anyone who loves fantasy/adventure series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good writing. Calms me down. Feb. 20 2012

I love this kind of stuff. If you enjoy nicely written fantasy with enjoyable characters, easily followed plot, gosh! What's not to love.

Only 4 stars because you should not confuse this with great writing or wonder if this is a new classic novel that will be studied for the ages.

But----if you love this kind of easy reading, pleasant writing, good story, empathetic characters, ... All that I, frankly, need then buy this short little series. I love this writer. When she publishes again, I shall buy it.

The writing is good. I recommend this writer and her stories without reservation. You will relax and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great end to an amazing series! March 10 2012

I loved this series and the relationships between the characters. The novels were written very well and I loved how different characters narrated for each chapter. I find it neat to be able to see what is going on in so many different characters' heads. This book was a great conclusion to the Fallen Kings Cycle and if you have not make sure to read Chronicles of the Necromancer which invloves many of the same characters and really should be read first!!! I hope that Gail Z. Martin continues to write about the Winter Kingdoms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good addition June 7 2012
By Lisa McGeen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The Dread is the second book in the Fallen Kings Cycle by Gail Z. Martin and things are not looking too good for the Winter Kingdoms. As the series name implies, kings are dying all across the land. The next generation of rulers must step up and lead their nations to war, for the Winter Kingdoms are under attack, from within and without. Internally, long suppressed dark cults are re-animating the dead, mass murderers are running loose, and traitors try to seize power. Externally, the kingdoms are being attacked by a nation from across the sea, a nation of unknown power, led by a mysterious dark summoner.

Tris, Summoner-King of Margolan must leave his wife, Kiara, and infant son, Cwynn, behind and lead his army to defend the coastlands. Meanwhile, Donelan, King of Isencroft, is assassinated and Kiara must assume the throne, leaving Cwynn behind. Cam, the King's Champion in Isencroft is left with the job of leading their armies. Berry is Queen in Principality and must rely on Jonmarc, as Queen's Champion. Jonmarc has left his pregnant wife, Carina, at home and must lead Berry's army of mercenaries while babysitting Gethin, Prince of Eastmark and potential suitor to Berry. Meanwhile, Jair, Prince of Dhasson, is with his wife, Talwyn, and the Sworn. The Dread, an ancient race long dead and watched over by the Sworn, have communicated to Talwyn that the invading army is trying to set the Nachele free.

For me, this was a fascinating read as I tried to lay out the various battles in my head and attempt to discern the invaders motive. The author must have had some rather interesting notes and charts while writing in order to so smoothly bring everything together at the end. This book was an excellent conclusion to the Fallen King Series and fitting sequel to the Chronicles of the Necromancer series. Gail Z. Martin has become one of my favorite authors and I am eagerly awaiting the release of the first book in the Ascendant Kingdoms Saga.

I enjoyed this book and I feel it was a great addition to the story. Wish it was a little longer because I zipped right through it. Just couldn't put it down. Recommend the whole series.
