Book Description

This third in a series of hardcover books joins the award-winning titles The Stratocaster Chronicles and The Soul of Tone by author/historian Tom Wheeler. In nearly 600 pages, The Dream Factory features hundreds of full-color photos of incredibly rare, collectible, and limited-edition handcrafted guitars. Learn how the Fender Custom Shop, originally intended to employ just two master craftsmen, grew into the most prolific custom instrument shop in the music industry. Features: * Foreword by Billy F Gibbons * More than 630 images illustrating the first master builders and their humble beginnings through the many changes up to present-day operations. Includes many one-of-a-kind custom guitar masterpieces and reproductions of acclaimed guitarists' instruments, such as Eric Clapton's "Blackie", Jimi Hendrix's Monterey Strat, Stevie Ray Vaughan's No. 1, and many more. A must-have for all guitar enthusiasts! * Unprecedented view inside one of the music industry's most creative custom instrument shops, revealing how playable works of art are created * Fascinating interviews with the shop's founders, most of the first-generation Master Builders, all of the current Master Builders, other key craftspeople, sales representatives, artists' guitar techs, marketers, executives, guitarists, and many of the graphic artists, woodcarvers, jewelers, pinstripers, graffiti artists, pearl-inlay specialists, and others who have partnered with the Master Builders to create art works of stunning beauty

5.0 out of 5 stars As detailed a CS history as you'll ever find., Nov 14 2011
This review is from: The Dream Factory: Fender Custom Shop (Hardcover)
Forget the internet mythology created on guitar message boards surrounding the Custom Shop, these are the facts, ma'am.

Lush photos, detailed histories of most of your favorite Custom Shop builders and insight into some of your favorite artist too.

This is a BIG book and even if you don't read a word in it, the photos can keep you going for a week. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Tom Wheeler Masterpiece!, Oct 5 2011

This book arrived today and it is everything a Fender fan could ever want: 592 page book , gorgeous photographs of cool guitars , a great historical understanding of the Fender Custom Shop and of course ... Tom Wheeler!
I have been reading Tom Wheeler books and articles (Guitar Player Magazine) since the late 70's and his books on Fender guitars and amps are a big factor of how i ever became a Fender loyalist.
I did not buy a Custom Shop guitar until 3 years ago and i really love the sound and look of it - as i look through the book it blows my mind how all of this started a bit tongue and cheek and has now blossomed into the biggest thing since Leo Fender made the Broadcaster/Telecaster 60 years ago.

like every other Fender book Tom has written , this will be enjoyed for many years to come!

great job!

I purchased this for my brother, who is a musician and a collector of guitars. He had not been aware of the book and seemed genuinely thrilled to have it and go through it.

Some of the guitars in this book will qualify as works of art in the near future.

They are very collectable and will command fantastic prices in the future.

Beautifully photographed and a little story for each one.
