A familiar face returns in the fifth season: Deputy Enos Strate (Sonny Shroyer), gone from the series since 1980 but now rejoining the burlesque that is the office of Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane (James Best) and his goofy underling, Deputy Cletus Hogg (Rick Hurst). Season highlights include "The Revenge of Hughie Hogg," in which Boss Hogg's ever-scheming nephew (Jeff Altman) makes a return appearance, this time with his eye on defeating Roscoe in the latter's re-election bid for top lawman. (Hughie being Hughie, he blackmails his uncle into supporting his run.) "Ding, Dong, the Boss Is Dead" finds Coy and Vance actually helping Boss Hogg escape an old moonshine runner's certain revenge by staging their diminutive nemesis' funeral. "Comrade Duke" concerns a Russian gymnast who seeks asylum at the Dukes' farm. Bo and Luke return in time for a few adventures, capping the season with "Daisy's Shotgun Wedding," in which the overprotected beauty strikes out on her own and is snatched away by a moonshiner's son, who wants to marry her. --Tom Keogh

Season 5 - some of the most action packed episodes of the Dukes of Hazzard,
By
This review is from: The Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete Fifth Season (DVD)
Another great season of the Dukes of Hazzard, Season 5 (22 episodes - originally aired in 1982-83) where both fans of the original Bo and Luke Duke, (John Shneider and Tom Wopat) and their cousins Cory and Vance Duke (Christopher Meyer and Byron Cherry) both had major parts in this season.(Episodes 1-18) Cory and Vance Duke moved in the home with Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle) and Daisy Duke (Catherine Bach) and then Bo and Luke Duke return at Episode 18, season 5, for the last four episodes. Cory and Vance Duke departed during episode 18, "Welcome back Bo 'n' Luke". In our opinion, some of the most action packed episodes of the Dukes of Hazzard were during the episodes where Cory and Vance Duke were fending off the antics of Sheriff Rosco P. Coltraine (James Best), and Boss J.D. Hogg's (Sorrel Booke) antics in trying to frame the "good ole boys" from crimes they did not commit. It seemed like Cory and Vance would always end up with a flat tire on the General Lee during their chases to catch the bad guys that Sheriff Rosco and Enos could not catch themselves. Our favourite episodes are Episode 1 the "The New Dukes" when the Mean Green Machine armoured car enters Capital City and causes havoc in the downtown where the skills of the Duke cousins along with Uncle Jesse and Daisy figure out a way to stop it. Enos Strate (Sonny Shroyer) returns from the Los Angeles Police Dept. back to Hazzard County in the first episode of Season Five, where Deputy Cletus Hogg (Rick Hurst) departs the cast during the 5th episode of this season. Cooter is always ready and willing to assist the Dukes when called upon. The Mean Green Machine returns to Hazzard County in Episode 14 of Season Five. Cooter Davenport (Ben Jones) keeps the General Lee in top working order for the Duke Family and is always ready and willing to assist his friends when called upon. Late in the season, is the return of Bo and Luke Duke from the Nascar circuit and it leaves the sudden departure of Cory and Vance Duke which is a shame, as they certainly could have continued on the show in their own right as the main characters as we continue re-watching the shows, since the originally aired ones back about 25 to 30 years ago, they certainly gave good performances with what we feel was good chemistry among the Duke clan; in the same way as Bo and Luke Duke did. Rather you are fans of the original Bo and Luke Duke, or Cory and Vance Duke, there is something for all family members to watch in season five. Another great season of action packed family comedy in Hazzard County where the General Lee saves the day on the back roads of Hazzard. The balladeer (Waylon Jennings) continues to keep the suspense and jokes going with his quick witted humour at the beginning of a car jump or the break between two scenes. Season 5 is one of our all time favourites of the seven season series of "The Dukes of Hazzard". I believe this is the 30th Anniversary Year of "The Dukes of Hazzard".

The Dukes are back for more high speed fun in Hazzard County, where things are done a little bit differently.Good show. A shoe that holds the value of family, friends, honour, and having a good time! Why don't they make shows like this nowadays?

The Fifth Season is worthy!,

Yes, 5 stars. There has simply never been another show on television like THE DUKES OF HAZZARD...and I doubt we will ever see something in its style again. But just because John Schneider and Tom Wopat ("Bo and Luke Duke") are absent on just about every episode of this season, doesn't mean that I will wait longer to purchase it.In hindsight, the introduction of "Coy and Vance Duke" into the storyline wasn't the great disaster it was in 1982. Schneider and Wopat walk off the show to strike over issues related to merchandise royalties, and the show clamors to hire two new individuals to fill the huge gap. Granted, the replacement cousins were no Bo and Luke, but hey, the character of Coy (played by Byron Cherry) was quite likeable and down-home like, and the change in roles allowed the show to experiment a little. Rick Hurst ("Deputy Cletus") stayed on the show as Sonny Shroyer ("Deputy Enos") returns from his failed spin-off series, and it's great that we have both deputies on several of this season's early shows until Hurst finally departs. Secondly, the comedic talents of "Boss Hogg" (Sorrell Booke) and "Sheriff Rosco" (James Best) are second to none in the fifth season, as the two really stepped it up to ease the absence of Schneider and Wopat. The two really carry the weight of the season, and they do it hillariously! Not only that, but one of the best episodes of the show's entire run, "Witness: Jesse Duke", shows the great talent of Denver Pyle ("Uncle Jesse"), and the chemistry of the "new Dukes" finally gels within the storyline and with the rest of the cast, only to be gone in the next episode. Otherwise, the stories found in this season are very good, and afterall, Bo and Luke do return towards the end. In fact, another unique element here is the episode "Welcome Back, Bo & Luke", which features Bo, Luke, Coy and Vance on screen all together in this episode only. A big thanks to Warner Brothers for continuing to release THE DUKES OF HAZZARD sets on DVD. Another thanks to Warner for making these single-sided discs (at an unbeatable price). Now if Warner would only re-release the first 3 seasons with the single-sided configuration! 27 of 28 people found the following review helpful

Warner Bros. continues to do a GREAT job with these "The Dukes of Hazzard" season box sets. Each time the content and extras are great, the price point is VERY reasonable (especially now that the sets consist of 8-9 single-sided discs each) and the release schedule is surprisingly swift! As I'm sure all of you know, this is the season where Bo and Luke were temporarily replaced by Coy and Vance. I don't think anyone seriously thought that Warner would skip this season for fear of it being less popular for that very reason, but anyone who really was concerned about there being a gaping hole in their collection can now lay those fears to rest.I remember seeing some of these episodes first-run, and as I recall there were some good ones thrown in the lot despite the absence of Schneider and Wopat. Besides, they both returned to the show for the last few episodes of the season, so it is not totally devoid of them. Any Coy and Vance haters had best remember that, as boycotting this season will cost them a few Bo and Luke episodes. Only two more seasons remain before we will be able to own the entire series in its' original, uncut format! That will all but render the chopped-up CMT airings obsolete. 18 of 18 people found the following review helpful
