The long-defunct, Southern California band regrouped for an album, an expensive tour (expensive for ticket buyers, that is), and this televised special, which features the Eagles in performance. Laid-back but sharp and even stirring during a longish acoustic set, the guys quickly get past the nostalgia element and sound truly viable. They even make it look easy: the sight of Joe Walsh wearing glasses and sitting in almost perfect repose as he effortlessly colors old hits "Tequila Sunrise" and new material such as "Learn to Be Still" may make you wonder why you ever stashed that guitar in the attic. But the band eventually gets off their stools and rocks out on "Hotel California" and other Eagles standards. All in all, it's an enjoyable and mellowing show. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Demo quality DTS June 8 2003
Format:DVD
While the 2.0 track is very good, the true star of this DVD is the soundtrack in DTS version. Make sure you have a killer subwoofer, turn it up, and close your eyes when the string intro to "Hotel California" kicks in and you'll think you're in the audience at the concert. Amazing sound quality, superb performances and very good choice of songs, from their old hits to their new stuff.
The video quality isn't top notch, but this is basically a recording of a concert, and the music should be king -- and in "Hell Freezes Over" the music is indeed king. For the geeks out there, the average bit rate seemed to be ~7 or so. I only looked periodically, so I think that's right. What that amounts to is more space was devoted to high quality sound reproduction and so that means there's less space for "extras" -- well, there are virtually no extras on this disk.
If you liked the Eagles, you'll LOVE this DVD. If you loved the Eagles, you'll be blown away. It's too bad that this DVD is still the standard by which all other concert DVDs are judged against, meaning that the studios haven't stepped up to produce more top quality concert DVDs.

There is no doubt that when The Eagles are on song there is nothing like them. The distinctive voices of their different lead vocalists, the ease with which they move between genre's, the brilliant standard of musicianship, their perfect harmonies and so on (I could go on for hours!) make The Eagles one of the best rock/country groups of all time. And this DVD only reinforces this!
I'm much younger and so wasn't around when The Eagles were big and it was this DVD that turned me into an huge Eagles fan. From the opening picking of Don Felder on "Hotel California" to Don Henley's haunting "Desperado" this DVD is a music lover's heaven.
You wouldn't have thought that they had been apart from 15 years because the boys slipped into the mood like an old pair of slippers. Henley sounded great delivering a number of tracks that leave one spellbound, "Wasted Time" especially. Glenn Frey slips into his laid back, country style with ease on such numbers as "Tequila Sunrise" and "Take it Easy". Joe Walsh is at his comedic best but also manages to show that the years have done nothing to lessen his amazing guitar playing. Timothy B. Schmit is a treat on the lovely new track "Love Will Keep Us Alive" and his excellent ballad "I Can't Tell You Why". And I mustn't forget to mention Don Felder's contribution on guitar which is proffessional to say the least.
All in all The Eagles have served up a fantastic selection of their greatest hits and some good new material in what is one of the best DVD's around. A sure fire winner whether you're an Eagles fan or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing group of guys May 10 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I had this on my wish list for quite a while and bought it when the price came down. I shouldn't have waited. It is so amazing to see these men get back together after all these years and sing their own and each other's songs in perfect harmony. Their voices have not been lost to the years. Might have seemed like there was still some tension with Don Felder as he seemed to be on his own during much of the performance but the group still played as a cohesive unit. Great job guys. I am not a country music fan by the way, though I remember listing to an Eagles album in the early 70's. I enjoy groups that can write lyrics that make sense and have meaning. This is a lost art but not lost on the Eagles. I forget Don Henley's exact words made years earlier about music videos, but it was something about predicting the end of creativity and meaningful music. He was so right. I also purchased Don Henley's greatest hits and enjoy every song on that album. These guys all write songs with meaning. I miss that so much. If you are a kindred soul, get this DVD. It's a good evening spent watching television.
