Product Description

Review

"Anthony has made a difference in the lives of many magnificent animals who otherwise would have been lost to the world. When you're feeling down and out and defeated and ready to give up, read this inspiring book and share it widely with others."
--Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals

"In my thirty-five years of studying man/animal communication I have met only a few individuals who have the ability to enter into the metaphysical realm of the exotic animal. Lawrence Anthony has been there and back. His wonderfully written book The Elephant Whisperer is a true reflection of his ability to be one of the pachyderms."
--Ralph Helfer, author of Modoc

"A lovingly written tale of close encounters, some beautiful and some frightening, with humans and nonhumans alike. Anthony's story of his trials and tribulations in preserving a herd of African elephants is a parable for the continent."
--Irene M. Pepperberg, author of Alex & Me

"An engaging and vividly personal account, The Elephant Whisperer invites you in, as confidant and confederate, from the first page and holds you rapt to the very last. A compelling reminder of the power and mysteries of the natural world, Thula Thula's elephants are lucky to have a friend like Lawrence Anthony."
--Amelia Thomas, author of The Zoo on the Road to Nablus

The Elephant Whisperer is every bit as much a page-turner as a novel. … Anyone who remembers Born Free, a personal story of tamed East African lions, will hope this book, too, is destined for the screen.”

I just purchased this book after my second visit to Thula Thula. Having met Lawrence once on this my latest visit I had heard stories about his connection with the herd to read the book was amazing. To read the book is to live in the moment that is Thula Thula. The wild but tranquil oasis that they have created is pure heaven. I was fortunate to just return home from South Africa and having witnessed 2 glorious days in the wild seeing not one but 3 new baby elephants! One just 5 days old. This book is a must for anyone who loves elephants and wants to see them in the wild where they belong. Lawrences committement to conservation should be saluted!! A great read. Lawrence in the real deal!

I bought this book in South Africa for my plane ride home to Toronto and had the entire book finished by the time I got home, who needs sleep! The author is warm and generous in his discriptions. I laughed out loud and cried in several chapters. The story of Nana and her elephant herd is fascinating but Anthony's description of living in the game reserve Thula Thula was beyond my imagination. I want to go back now so I can visit his reserve. I have just bought his second book now and am waiting excitedly for its arrival.

This has been my main summer read and loved every minute of it. The book is full of exciting adventures while also told in a very sensitive and intelligent way. I admire the authour so much and I am deeply saddened that he died. I heard about the book when I read a story about a man that was loved by elephants and when he died hundreds of elephants came to say goodbye to him from thousands of miles away. It touched me so much I had to read more about him so I got this book. Also, it helps you better understand what happens in Africa and the issues they must deal with in animal reserves. By the way, my husband is reading it and loving it too.

One of the best books I have ever read. His commitment to his country and its inhabitants is remarkable regardless of whether they had two legs or four. Sadly since reading this book I learned of his passing and even though that occurred two years ago I felt a loss for those who knew him. Out of nowhere "his" elephants appeared at his home to pay homage to this remarkable man and mourn his passing. One would wonder how they knew he had died but read the book and you will understand.

What a fantastic book. I couldn't put it down. The dedication this man had to save those elephants and the ensuing relationship he developed was just magical. One of those books you don't want to end. I felt all of the author's emotions while reading.

If you're looking for an first rate autobiography that avoids the usual pitfall of excessive navel-gazing and self-fascination,... I've just finished reading what must be one of the best I've ever come across in my many years of reading. If you're up for a real adventure mixed with all manner of other spicy and worthwhile ingredients, check out "The Elephant Whisperer" by Lawrence Anthony.

I won't add any plot details as this could only diminish the wealth of unexpected joys waiting to unfold in this book. (And anyway,... how can anyone participate in a real adventure if they already know in advance where it's leading ?)

Wonderfully written. A real find and a book I have recommended to many others as it graphically describes a park owner's life

This is a beautiful story, told like you were sitting with the author in his living room. I learned so much about elephants from the book, and what very special, extraordinary creatures they are. I can't recommend this book highly enough to others.
