Product Description

WINNER, 2013 Hugo Award for Best Novella!
Nominee, 2013 World Fantasy Award for Novella!

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, The Emperor's Soul showcases a fascinating magic system as the clock ticks down for a condemned criminal.

When Shai is caught replacing the Moon Scepter with her nearly flawless forgery, she must bargain for her life. An assassin has left the Emperor Ashravan without consciousness, a circumstance concealed only by the death of his wife. If the emperor does not emerge after his hundred-day mourning period, the rule of the Heritage Faction will be forfeit and the empire will fall into chaos.

Shai is given an impossible task: to create—to Forge—a new soul for the emperor in less than one hundred days. But her soul-Forgery is considered an abomination by her captors. She is confined to a tiny, dirty chamber, guarded by a man who hates her, spied upon by politicians, and trapped behind a door sealed in her own blood. Shai's only possible ally is the emperor's most loyal councillor, Gaotona, who struggles to understand her true talent.

Time is running out for Shai. Forging, while deducing the motivations of her captors, she needs a perfect plan to escape…

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet Oct. 18 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Brandon Sanderson' s style is natural, good flow. No run of the mill, twists and turns that goes on and on forever . Plot is original, refreshing and highly entertaining . Like the main character Shai' s work, this novella is indeed a masterpiece of a story.

It is so unique this should make into a movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgery and souls Feb. 23 2014
Brandon Sanderson is one of the few living fantasy authors who can actually come up with new, unique magical systems.

And his novella "The Emperor's Soul" introduces a fasincating new kind of magic -- Forging, in which a person can overwrite reality with what might have been. It's only a novella, but Sanderson proves that he doesn't need a 400-page tome to write a powerful, action-packed story with a well-developed heroine.

The expert Forger Shai is in prison, awaiting execution by the Rose Empire, when she's offered a chance to earn her freedom. The Emperor has been assassinated, and while they were able to fix his body, his mind is now gone. His advisors have bought some time by claiming that he's grieving for his wife, but that will only last ninety days.

They need Shai to do something terrible: Forge a new soul for the Emperor. Not only is it considered an abomination, but it's incredibly difficult.

Shai has no choice, so she begins learning everything she can in order to create a soulstamp for the Emperor -- which is no easy task, since she has to know what kind of person he truly was. But the hardest task may be planning her escape, especially since she's now enmeshed in a deadly political scheme.

Brandon Sanderson is a master of the doorstopper fantasy epic, but "The Emperor's Soul" proves that he's just as good in shorter works. And while the action rarely even moves outside of Shai's room, he manages to give the feeling that we've dropped into a rich, well-developed world that is just begging for exploration.

He also creates a really fascinating magic system -- it can turn any item/person into what it MIGHT have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative storyline June 16 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I discovered Brandon Sanderson when he was chosen to finish The Wheel of Time Series. His imagination is amazing and I truly enjoyed the word he created for The Emperor's Soul. The characters are very engaging and although this is a shorter story I found myself totally immersed in their drama. I would recommend this to fans of fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying read. Jan. 13 2014
By Janet Sketchley TOP 1000 REVIEWER
With half the time she needs, no certainty of success, and the knowledge that her captors will kill her in the end, Shai sets to work—on Forging the Emperor's soul and on planning her escape.

The story keeps readers wondering: Shai is a person of integrity, an artist and a shrewd observer. Why does she Forge instead of creating original art? The ruling council who control her need the Emperor alive to prevent a power shift and thus maintain their own positions. What might they try for personal gain? And how much forbidden magic will they need to allow?

The ending grows organically from the story, yet I didn't anticipate it. And the time spent with Shai and her counterpart, Gaotona, feels like time spent with friends. Yes, The Emperor's Soul is novella-length, but it's long enough to deliver a complete and nicely compact story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Engaging Sept. 10 2014
By Lorina Stephens TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
Sanderson was recommended to me as a genre author worth reading. I'm not sorry I followed up on that recommendation.

The Emperor's Soul presents an intriguing story of a forger who is able to create reproductions through magical carving of seals, inscribed with the history and detail of the object and its maker. In fact, she is so good at her art she is employed by the Emperor's most trusted advisers to create a seal which will return the Emperor to himself after a botched assassination.

Rich with character studies, environmental detail and intrigue, this is an engaging bit of escapism.

4.0 out of 5 stars short but entertaining Dec 10 2012
I almost decided to give this one a pass due to its price and short length, but glad that I decided to buy and give it a read. This isn't Sanderson's best and I think I feel that way because it was just short, yet if you are looking for a short read that isn't going to take a number of books to come to a conclusion then this one might be for you. I hope Sanderson builds off this book and `Elantris' as he continues that series.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable and entertaining read. Feb. 8 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An enjoyable read - if only novella length. Certainly the main characters are engaging and could have been developed more through flashbacks, leading to a longer novel-length read. The talent is definitely there and the story quite interesting. I look forward to more books set in the same setting, and even with the same characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but Great Sept. 16 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would have given it 5 stars except for how short it was. It's 20% of the length of a novel and 50% of the price.

That said, If Brandon writes any more short stories with these same characters or on the same world then I will continue to buy them.
