4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of sci-fi novellas, Oct 7 1998

This review is from: The End of the Dreams (Hardcover)
I obtained this book through the Science fiction book club. I was familiar with James Gunn through "Kampus" and another book whoose name escapes me. This book contains three stories, two of which are excellent. One details mankinds seek for pleasure that culminates in the entire race returning to an artificial womb. Another is an "immortal" story, based upon the concept that the TV show, with Christopher George, was (very) loosely based. The third is not up to the standards of the other two, and deals with the adaptability of humanity, even to life in space. Mr. Gunn has a disturbing ability to see the flaws in our very human lives, and expound upon those to show where we could very believably go, if we fail to keep those traits in check. I believe he basically feels we can do that, and the main characters in the stories are the ones who triumph over the excesses of the masses. His stories give insights that cause you to stop and consider what he's saying. This is something I've rarely found in science fiction. This is good fiction.
