Product Description

Product Description

The sport of long-distance riding is one of the fastest growing equestrian activities in the world. This book is a comprehensive survey of all aspects of endurance riding, and gives the newcomer and the seasoned competitor - as well as the interested bystander - an excellent overview of the history and practice of the sport. Part One is a fascinating look at the horse in history, with vividly told and often moving stories of endurance feats from the time of Homer until the present. The prodigious marches of Alexander the Great and the Mongols, the tragedies or warfare from the middle ages to Afghanistan today, and the stamina required of the horse as beast of burden and conveyer of passengers are brought alive, as are the journeys of horses and riders who covered the miles for the sake of the ride itself. For those participating in the sport today, Part Two contains practical instruction, from the basics with the novice horse to tips for the 100 miler. The type of horse, feeding, schooling and conditioning are all covered, together with down to earth advice and information on preparing for and competing in a ride, and how to deal with (of preferably avoid) the various problems which may occur. Part Three is an exhaustive survey of the nations which currently take part in the international sport of endurance riding. Each country's rules are summarised, and cameo portraits are presented of their top horses and riders, together with the comments of many of the competitors on what is important to them about endurance riding and how they would like to see the sport develop.

About the Author

Ann Hyland started riding at the age of twelve, her reward for obtaining a school scholarship. Her professional career with horses began where she moved to the USA, where she ran a livery, training and riding stables and first started endurance riding. After successfully completing 100-milers with her Standardbred mare, she returned to England with this mare and a yearling Arabian stallion who was to become one of Britain's leading endurance horses. As well as competing very successfully herself, both nationally and internationally, Ann Hyland has bred and produced many endurance horses for other riders, and has helped newcomers to get their start in the sport. She has also been active in many other equestrian fields, breaking, training and producing other people's horses for showing under Western saddle and in Palomino, Appaloosa and Quarter Horse classes. She judges for the British Quarter Horse Association and the Western Horsemen's Association, as well as at local level. She started the Endurance Horse and Pony Society of Great Britain and has been active in many other equestrian societies. Ann Hyland has written a large number of articles on all aspects of horsemanship over the last few years, and is now writing full time. Her books include Beginner's Guide to Western Riding, Beginner's Guide to Endurance Riding, From Foal to Five Years, and Riding Long Distance.

This review is from: The Endurance Horse: A World Survey from Ancient Civilizations to Modern Competition (Hardcover)
When THE ENDURANCE HORSE claims to be a "world survey of Endurance Riding from Ancient civilization to Modern Competition" it meant it. The first 9 chapters relate notable endurance riding situations from history, including the Assyrians, Alexander the Great & Bucephalus, and the Mongols. The next section of the book deals with modern day riding. The final section discusses Endurance Riding in various countries. I found the book a good introduction to the subject and the history section a great resource as a writer.
