Vastly expanding 1995's single disc Greatest Hits, The Essential Bruce Springsteen easily surpasses the earlier best-of set by serving up all its true essentials and tossing in less appreciated treats and a full disc of rarities. Disc one spans the first decade of Springsteen's recording career, serving up at least two tracks each from the six albums that laid the groundwork for his '80s burst into superstardom. Disc two picks up with his mainstream breakthrough, 1984's Born in the U.S.A., and carries on through 2002's The Rising, tossing in live recordings of "American Skin" and "Land of Hope and Dreams" for good measure. The selections and sequencing surpass those made on Greatest Hits, though there's not too much in the way of surprises, other than that it appears that Born in the U.S.A. hasn't aged all that well for the Boss; here, he selects only three songs from the hit-laden smash, one fewer than is found on the skimpy Greatest Hits. Disc three is where the fun really starts for all but neophytes. The live "Held Up Without a Gun" is as gutsy a one minute and 20 seconds as Springsteen as one could ask for, and the likes of "Trapped," "Countin' on a Miracle," and a cover of "Viva Las Vegas" rank with his signature songs. --Steven Stolder

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but incomplete May 7 2004
By Toby
Format:Audio CD
As a long-term fan I see this as a collection of great songs, but also a missed opportunity. Why include all the greatest hits again, some of which are quite average by Bruce's standards, while missing out on his truly exceptional moments such as Loose Ends, Roulette, Stand On It, Janey Don't Lose Heart and many more, which are not so well known but better than many released tracks? Also some of the selections from his albums are really bizarre, especially from The Rising, from which he actually seems to have chosen the weakest songs on the album, not the best!
Having said all that, no album of Bruce's songs can ever really be less than exceptional. Truth be told, had I come to this fresh having just discovered Bruce, I would see this as probably the best couple of CDs ever made. Bruce's talent is that he has everything - a genius for perceptive lyrics, a wonderful voice and a great ear for a melody. Highly recommended for any new fan, but a little disappointing for 'tramps like us'!

5.0 out of 5 stars TRUE BLUE May 8 2006
Format:Audio CD
I WORK AT THE LOCAL HARDWARE SHOP, I HANDLE ALL PRODUCTS REGARDING GARDENING - WORKING THE 9 TO 5 EVERYDAY IS TOUGH. TRUE BLUE COLLAR. BRUCE SEEMS TO UNDERSTAND MY SITUATION. I COME HOME TO A HOT MEAL, PLAY WITH MY KIDS AND AFTER THAT WE ALWAYS GO FOR A DRIVE IN MY TRUCK LISTENING TO BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. THIS ALBUM HAS EVERYTHING YOU COULD ASK FOR. ALSO, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM AND A BIT MORE EDGY, BE SURE TO CHECK BON JOVI'S "HAVE A NICE DAY", IT TRULY IS AN ALBUM WORTH PURCHASING. HAVE A NICE DAY AND SPREAD THE MOVEMENT! :)

The Boss ... Bruce Springsteen .. ah the memories I have of listening to his music when I was "growin' up" (no that song is not on this collection!). He's definitely one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our time, and today's "artists" don't hold a candle to the greatness that is Springsteen. No "essential" collection will please everyone as it's just too hard to put all of an artist's best songs into one collection. But if you have limited funds and don't already own all of Springsteen's albums, might as well give this one a listen.
