Entrée to Milton May 22 2011
By C. C. Black - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is an eight-disc overview of key works by Milton, the longest of which are abridged ("Paradise Lost" and especially "Samson Agonistes"). Because the longer works can be heavy weather for all but the most stouthearted Miltonian, the condensations, intelligently executed, do not trouble me; indeed, they make it more likely that I'll listen to them again. It enhances my enjoyment to read the text before me as I listen, though the recitations are clear enough that I could listen to them while driving and catch most everything. This, in fact, I did with the eighth disc, which offers an informative biography of Milton. The readers--Anton Lesser, Samantha Bond, and Derek Jacobi--are old pros with classic audiobooks; they do not disappoint. Naxos interrupts the tedium of straight narration with occasional musical interludes appropriate to the texts; this too, is appreciated. This set's price (currently around $55.00) is rather steep for my pocketbook; I took a chance with a secondhand dealer and was not at all disappointed: Shipment was as fast as Amazon Prime; the article turned out to have been a new and unopened from France, at about half the price.
