Product Description

From Amazon

When originally published in 1971, The Exorcist became not only a bestselling literary phenomenon, but one of the most frightening and controversial novels ever written. (When the author adapted his book to the screen two years later, it then became one of the most terrifying movies ever made.) Blatty fictionalized the true story of a child's demonic possession in the 1940s. The deceptively simple story focuses on Regan, the 11-year-old daughter of a movie actress residing in Washington, D.C.; the child apparently is possessed by an ancient demon. It's up to a small group of overwhelmed yet determined humans to somehow rescue Regan from this unspeakable fate. Purposefully raw and profane, this novel still has the extraordinary ability to literally shock us into forgetting that it is "just a story." The Exorcist remains a truly unforgettable reading experience. Blatty published a sequel, Legion, in 1983. --Stanley Wiater --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifying!!!!, July 19 2004
As horrifying as the film is, the novel surpasses it big time!
First of all, the film is very slow to take off with the frightening bits, and is boring for the first fifty minutes or so, but in the book - the eeriness starts instantly.

The characters are a lot more likeable in the book, and we see a lot more of the snooping detective - Kinderman.
Now, I'm an absolutely huge fan of King, and all the books I've read belonging to him have freaked me out in some way or gave me chills, or plainly stopped me from sleeping. But this book is so eerie, it's undescribable.

It's kind of like the eeriness starts your engine, and your warming up. And when you get to a more frightening scene of the book you feel like throwing it and never looking at it again.

Ah no, seriously, you wouldnt throw it away - but you would definitely think about it. It's a reasonably small book so you could read it in one night, but the eeriness and terrifying sequences have pushed me onto my fourth night of reading.

Truly, an excellent read, but one you wont read again for a long time after, unless that is; your made of stone!!!!! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychologically Chilling, Dec 8 2008

I saw the movie several times before I picked up the book so I already had a preconceived notion of what the novel might entail. As a fan of the film I was happy to learn that the book and the movie were almost identical. The novel however has far greater detail that allows the chilling story to play with your mind. If you are looking for a frightening read that not only has the power to captivate you but also engulf you in terror then this book is for you. The only question I had to ask myself once I read the final page was how William Peter Blatty wrote such horror and still was able to sleep at night.

This review is from: The Exorcist (Hardcover)
....and this coming from someone that watches horror movies with ease. I loved the movie as one of my favorites, and it obviously creeped me out, but it didn't keep me from sleeping...My mind played all sorts of tricks on me while in my bed with the lamp on as I read this book...Buy it if you wanna get the crap scared out of you.
