From the Back Cover

After narrowly surviving his last operation, Gabriel Allon, the wayward son of Israeli intelligence, has taken refuge behind the walls of the Vatican, where he is restoring one of Caravaggio's greatest masterpieces. But early one morning he is summoned to St. Peter's Basilica by Monsignor Luigi Donati, the all-powerful private secretary to His Holiness Pope Paul VII. The body of a beautiful woman lies broken beneath Michelangelo's magnificent dome. The Vatican police suspect suicide, though Gabriel believes otherwise. So, it seems, does Donati. But the monsignor is fearful that a public inquiry might inflict another scandal on the Church, and so he calls upon Gabriel to quietly pursue the truth—with one caveat.

"Rule number one at the Vatican," Donati said. "Don't ask too many questions."

Gabriel learns that the dead woman had uncovered a dangerous secret—a secret that threatens a global criminal enterprise that is looting timeless treasures of antiquity and selling them to the highest bidder. But there is more to this network than just greed. A mysterious operative is plotting an act of sabotage that will plunge the world into a conflict of apocalyptic proportions. . . .

An intoxicating blend of art, intrigue, and history, The Fallen Angel moves swiftly from the cloistered chambers of the Vatican to the glamorous ski slopes of St. Moritz to the graceful avenues of Berlin and Vienna—and, finally, to a shocking climax beneath the world's most sacred and contested parcel of land. Each setting in this extraordinary novel is rendered with the care of an Old Master, as are the spies, lovers, priests, and thieves who inhabit its pages. It is a story of faith and of the destructive power of secrets—and an all too timely reminder that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books in This Outstanding Series Aug. 16 2012

"Whoever rewards evil for good,
Evil will not depart from his house." -- Proverbs 17:13 (NKJV)

Gabriel Allon has finally achieved separation from Israeli intelligence, enjoying the task of restoring a masterpiece inside the Vatican. This tranquility is disrupted by a Vatican curator's mysterious death. Did she fall? Did she jump? Did someone harm her? Because of the delicate questions the death raises, Monsignor Donati, the pope's private secretary, asks Gabriel to look into matters.

He soon finds clues leading to a major criminal scheme, one that uses death to oil its operations. What else could be beneath the tip of this iceberg?

The plot and pacing are extraordinarily smooth and intriguing. I felt as if I were reading a classic novel, rather than a contemporary thriller. The character development and storytelling are special.

As much as I admire this series, The Fallen Angel stands far above many of the recent books in the series. Don't miss it!

Bravo, Mr. Silva!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fallen Angel Aug. 9 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I cannot get enough of Daniel Silva's Gabriel Alon character and the intricate stories which he weaves about this intrepid spy. Frankly, after reading all the books in this series, I almost expected Mr. Silva to have reached the end of the line as our fictional hero seemed to have reached the end of his career in the last novel. Nonetheless, the current novel picks up where the previous ones have left off, and with a cast of familiar and new characters ,we see that Silva (& Alon) still have some gas left in their tanks. I can hardly wait for the next engaging volume and I hope that our author can keep finding ways to prevent Gabriel from leaving the service of his country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!! July 31 2012
Another masterpiece by Daniel Silva!

The story moves through time and spaces holly to Christians Jews and Muslims. The story within a story is set up against true events and real places and leaders. If you like to know more about the Middle East than what you are being fed by short news clips on TV, this is your kind of read.

Surprising development after surprising revelation left me with no choice but to put the book down only to eat and sleep.

This is a book I could not put down once I started to read... History driven, precise documentation... the scenario is breathtaking... The description places you on the scene.

Religious facts for all denominations ... actual factoids...

It describes what might have been. The scenes are descriptive and surreal. Loved the plot of the whole story. Daniel S. has great knowledge of the cities and sceneries where the story took place. It was interesting from the very beginning...

Loved it...

Book 12, in the Gabriel Allon series

Mr. Silva has to be one of the finest writers of international intrigue we have these days. His Gabriel Allon series features one of the most memorable and compelling character in contemporary fiction. His adventures have stayed fresh and exciting making each novel more successful than the previous.

With lots of action and interesting political points of view “The Fallen Angel” starts in a classic Gabriel way. He is found back in action taking refuge behind the walls of the Vatican restoring one of Caravaggio’s masterpieces. It opens with a murder in St. Peter’s Basilica and soon the story weaves different topics: art, politics, religions, etc. and also current issues such as the Vatican bank scandals and the threat of nuclear attacks. His investigation takes us on a journey around Europe and Israel. It is clear in the description that Mr. Silva loves the topic of terrorism and is passionate about the Middle East politics and strategy. This thriller provides an exciting plot and a page-turning story hard to put down. Although this is an excellent read it has flaws and this lie in the intensive and relentless attention to details. At the end of the book Mr. Silva highlights where fiction starts and reality falls, a much appreciated note.
