Beautiful book, but nothing new,
By Miss Multiplicity (Calgary, AB Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Fashion File: Advice, Tips, and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men (Hardcover)
I don't want to be unfair, but I expected so much more from a style book by the costume designer of a successful period drama. The 60's marked the end of so many of the more refined elements of style, such as hats and gloves, and serious foundation garments. I see all of these elements on display on the show; overall I think Mad Men has raised the bar for authenticity in costuming... So when I found the book lacking "in-depth" anything, I was let down. The Fashion File is beautifully illustrated, and has all of the categories and themes one would expect to find in a style guide. But that's where it ends. For instance, I expected details on care for vintage garments, but instead found only three paragraphs. This is a fantastic "getting started" manual for the uninitiated, but if you've read a few style books and pick up the occasional fashion magazine, this book isn't likely to add much to your fashion wisdom.

I Expected More,
This review is from: The Fashion File: Advice, Tips, and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men (Hardcover)
I am obsessed with the 50's and 60's vintage fashion and was excited to see a book by the stylist of Mad Men. I guess I grabbed it too quickly because once I started reading, I was a bit disappointed. I expected a treasure trove of 60's fashion photos, including some of the best outfits on the MM actresses. The first shocker was the photo of January Jones in her forward. Instead of a photo of her as Betty Draper, there is a headshot of her with some hideous plastic thing around her neck that she wore to the 2010 Golden Globes. WHO CARES what she wears in 2010??? If I want to see this stuff, and I don't, I would pick up an Enquirer. There are only two of her as Betty Draper. What a letdown. I only counted one of Joan, and none of Peggy or Trudy. To be fair, there is some useful information on putting outfits together, organizing your closet and trying new things, but the book just didn't concentrate enough on the 60's which is when Mad Men takes place. There is also a section on men which did not interest me at all. I really appreciate the detail and effort the stylist puts into the show, and I think she does an amazing job with that, so I am baffled as to why this book was such a letdown.

A wonderful book that will help each and everyone of us (including those who think they are plump) become aware of our best assets and exploit them. Her suggestions about colors, accessories and even a new self-image could be life-changing and they are not limited to vintage looks. I enjoy reading about the Mad Men actresses' vintage underwear and the perfection that goes into the author creating exquisite wardrobes for the actors. Well written, it shows aesthetically beautiful drawings and it's easy to read. Tips you will never forget. Well worth the money.
