Book Description

March 9 2011
The ultimate tool for aspiring fashion designers who love to sketch clothes but dont have the skills (or the patience!) to draw proportional figures, this sketchpad is filled with 420 figure templates in 20 different fashion-forward poses. Printed in a specially formulated Pantone color, the figures disappear from view when photocopied or scanned, eliminating the need to fuss with light boxes or tracing paper. An illustrated garment glossary showing the distinguishing details between acaftan, a sheath, a maxi, and so on-plus additional resources-help fashion rookies create the wardrobes of their dreams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough July 16 2013

I bought this product since I needed some more references for my fashion sketching.

I think the garment encyclopedia is INCREDIBLY useful to see the basic garments to then use in its simplistic form or make it more complex. This gives a baseline for all garments and is a good starting point.

The croquis in the book are also useful, although I don't see the point in having more than one figure looking the same (since I wouldn't draw in it anyway and I'd rather trace the figure). But overall it's definitely worth the price and useful to see basic figures and garments.

A good reference book but if I had to buy just one fashion reference book this wouldn't be my first choice, but rather 3rd or 4th on my list!

FASHION SketchBook by Tamar Daniel

I bought the 8.5" x 11.5", spiral-bound, FASHION SketchBook for the page of 70 small line drawings of construction styles (collars, lapels, waists, cuffs, etc.) shown in the preview, along with 3 pp of glossary. I want to learn the elements of clothing design.

The remaining 58 sheets of heavy paper stock is printed on both sides with 400 female outlines in runway stances, just dark enough to see, too faint to register in photocopies, for overdrawing and overpainting clothing.

The publisher believes that designers want to save the time of sketching clothes hangers, and wannabees are happy to be relieved of learning how to draw the stylized, long-legged fashion figure. Anybody with 401 ideas will have to buy another SketchBook, or learn how to draw.

It seems to me that professional designers can sketch figures in the exact pose and size envisioned with less bother than conforming to templates, and wannabees who have not learned to sketch a standard figure are very likely to need some study for rendering drapery well enough to show. Furthermore, both pros and wannabees need male figures and children along with female models for El Greco. But, what do I know?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Nov. 22 2011
By Lonnie N. Smith - Published on Amazon.com

I got this for my 12 year old niece who is getting into fashion design as a hobby. I was a little worried as to what I was getting until it arrived. It does away with the cartoony design prints that are prevalent in a lot of other kids design kits, and look much more "professional". It is made of heavy stock paper and cardboard (for the covers) and has TONS of sheets with the faint outline of a woman's body in different poses all throughout it. The first couple pages have tons of basics and definitions and suggestions for design as well, which was handy. Definitely worth the purchase.

Perfect. I was smiling the whole time I was looking through this book. One setback however is it's only female models. But I still recommend this book for anyone who wants to getting into making clothes, even just clothes for yourself. It's a wonderful book to have on hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fashion Sketchpad review June 11 2011
By Vilma - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Diary
I got my Fashion Sketchpad earlier than estimated and I like that. It's quite big (slightly bigger than A4) and thick. The sketchpad covers are made of pressed cardboard. You can decorate the covers however you like, they are monochrome grey, as the pink and blue image with the title of the book has to be removed, when you open the book. The upper left corner of my front cover was a bit bent and torn, when I got it out of the packaging, I don't know why. All in all the pad is quite heavy to carry around.
The paper inside is white, thick and of good quality. The figure outlines are easily seen and well-printed. They are pale pinkish grey. All sheets are detachable, there's a special tearing line for doing it accurately. If you detach the sheets however, you can't put it in A4 transparent file holders, as they are slightly wider than that. The metal spiral is quite hard and doesn't bend easily.
It's a good portfolio prep, which you can personalize however you like.
