Product Description

This is the intimate and revealing autobiography of Margaret Rhodes, the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and the niece of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Margaret Rhodes was born into the Scottish aristocracy, into a now almost vanished world of privilege. Royalty often came to stay and her house was run in the style of Downton Abbey. Her aunt was Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth is her first cousin. In the Second World War years, she 'lodged' at Buckingham Palace while she worked for MI5. She was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin Princess Elizabeth to Prince Philip. Three years later the King and Queen attended her own wedding; Princess Margaret was a bridesmaid. In 1990, she was appointed as a Lady-in-Waiting to the Queen Mother, acting also as her companion, which she describes in touching detail. In the early months of 2002, she spent as much time as possible with her frail and ailing aunt, and was at her bedside when she died at Easter that year. This is a fascinating account of a special life, with the author's family relationships to nobility and royalty, her long and special marriage, her children and grandchildren and a life lived to the full. Major serial under negotiation, this title is to be featured in "Majesty Magazine".

About the Author

Margaret Rhodes, first cousin to Queen Elizabeth, was a bridesmaid at the 1947 wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and three years later married Denys Rhodes, a grandson of the 5th Lord Plunket. The World War II years were spent at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, where she lodged while she worked for MI6. Margaret Rhodes was lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. She now lives in the Great Park in Windsor, although still regularly visits Balmoral and Sandringham.

Although I consider myself up-to-date on the Royal family, I must admit I knew nothing of Margaret Rhodes. I found the book very interesting and at times, it made me laugh out loud. And there were times, like the depiction of "The Final Curtsey", that I found very moving. It is one of those books that I hated to finish, I enjoyed it so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read!, Jan 18 2012
This review is from: The Final Curtsey: The Autobiography of Margaret Rhodes, First Cousin of the Queen and Niece of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (Hardcover)
Margaret Rhodes delights with her account of a most unique life. She also generously opens an endearing window on the private lives of public figures, humanizing them in the process. Part private memoir, part social history, it actually helped me understand my parents' perspective on life better, they having lived through many of the same time periods of war and peace, ration and plenty. I would love to see this memoir adapted for television!

Beyond the actual 'stories' recounted in the book, it is interesting to see the historical and emotional lineage that impacts each generation and shapes their lives, for as long as they conform to its preset delineations. The combination of innocence and sophistication, fun and formality, frugality and lavishness, love of nature and duty to destiny, and above all, a firm back bone to deal with whatever challenge is presented....it's all here in this admirable lady and the company she keeps.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't be deceived., Jan 10 2012
This review is from: The Final Curtsey: The Autobiography of Margaret Rhodes, First Cousin of the Queen and Niece of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (Hardcover)
Despite the cover photo and double entendre of the title this is a pro monarchist diatribe which supports an outdated system- a complete waste of time and money, especially when expecting something much more racy.
