Book Description

Feb 1 1991
At the top of his class at Harvard Law, he had  his choice of the best in America. He made a deadly  mistake. When Mitch McDeere signed on with  Bendini, Lambert & Locke of Memphis, he thought he  and his beautiful wife, Abby, were on their way.  The firm leased him a BMW, paid off his school  loans, arranged a mortgage and hired him a  decorator. Mitch McDeere should have remembered what his  brother Ray -- doing fifteen years in a Tennessee  jail -- already knew. You never get nothing for  nothing. Now the FBI has the lowdown on Mitch's  firm and needs his help. Mitch is caught between a  rock and a hard place, with no choice -- if he  wants to live.

From Amazon

D.W. Moffett uses his youthful voice to outstanding effect in this excellent abridgment of Grisham's bestselling thriller about a Harvard Law grad aggressively recruited by a curiously obscure firm. "We're small and very selective... we screened over two thousand third-year law students at the best schools. Only one letter was sent." They've decided he's their man and to get him they offer top dollar, dangle a BMW, and woo his wife with offers impossible to refuse. But as the wide-eyed youngsters soon discover, there's a catch. Moffett gives an excellent performance, bringing the story to life with vibrant and believable characterizations and a smooth, knowing narrative. (Running time: 3 hours, 2 cassettes) --George Laney --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Grisham's gripping fiction debut describes the inner workings of a law firm set up by the Mafia to launder money and concoct tax evasions. Mitchell McDeere, third in his class at Harvard Law, is wooed relentlessly by the prestigious Memphis tax firm of Bendini, Lambert and Locke. Succumbing to the firm's high-powered salesmanship, he rejects some of the country's best-known firms to join the group, where he is awed by the opulent lifestyle pressed upon him. But the company has ruthless, underhanded methods of gathering information (they wire the homes of all associates) and ensuring loyalty (social situations are severely monitored). The firm's mania for security and secrecy, combined with the fact that the only lawyers who have ever left did so in coffins--five in 15 years--arouse Mitch and wife Abby's curiosity, and they rapidly find themselves in a labyrinth of intrigue and danger. Grisham, a criminal defense attorney, lucidly describes law office procedures at the highest levels, smoothly meshing them with the criminal events of the narrative. Mitch and Abby are appealing characters, though a suspension of disbelief may be required to accept their super-cool behavior while they are on the run from both the FBI and the Mafia. Nonetheless, readers will be totally hooked by this unusual and absorbing story. 50,000 first printing; Literary Guild main selection; movie rights to Paramount.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beware of Offers You Cannot Refuse Aug 14 2008
By Donald Mitchell #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The Firm launched John Grisham to superstar status as the world's favorite debunker of the legal profession. The Firm perfectly casts the way that high-potential law students are wined, dined, and bribed into taking sweat shop jobs that ruin their lives. But like all good novels, that's just the beginning of the story. How does a small-to-medium-sized Memphis firm outbid the Wall Street boys? Therein lies a good tale.

The Firm is appealing because it takes you inside the world of exclusive, top-drawer law firms and reveals the temptations that lie there awaiting the unsuspecting young lawyer. John Grisham makes much of the detail highly accurate while also taking you on a fantasy trip that no one has taken before. The scope of his imagination about "what if" a law firm yielded to temptation is breathtaking. I could have daydreamed for 400 years and never come up with a tale like this one.

Unlike most thrillers, this one had me turning pages eagerly right up to the last page. It was truly an exciting experience for this Harvard Law School graduate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff Jan 1 2007
Format:Paperback
The novel that made Grisham famous (along with the movie) is one of my all-time favorites. Next to THE CORRECTIONS BY j. Franzen and the novel NEVER LET ME GO, this ranks on the top of the list. Written before Grisham's foray into books such as PAINTED HOUSE and INNOCENT MAN, THE FIRM is a classic, filled with excellent pacing and an ability to keep you on the edge of your seat. Also highly recommended: ROSES ARE RED by Patterson.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book that will keep you saying WOW! Jun 12 2004
By Cameron
Format:Paperback
I tried reading other kinds of books, like Stephen King books but they just didnt do it for me. The action started way to late. However, in The Firm the action started right in the begininning of the book. After the first 40 pages I could already notice something wasnt quite right about the Firm. This made me want to find out even more. Some of the situations that Mitch Mc Deere got himself out of were pure genius on Grisham's behalf. It was also the plot as a whole was just superb. I urge everyone to read it. The thrill of this book will keep you yurning pages until you finish. It had a fully satisfying ending. I just couldnt stop think WOW how did he get himself out of that. It is my new favorite book and I cant wait to read some more of his book. Also , if you like the Firm you will also enjoy the client.
