Book Description

Heart disease is the nation’s leading health crisis, affecting more than 25.6 million Americans and causing 650,000 deaths each year. A longtime health editor, Lawrence Chilnick was stunned when he suffered a heart attack at age 48-but assumed his medications would take care of the condition. They didn’t. Five years later, Chilnick needed a quadruple bypass. At that point, he set out to turn his life around by educating himself on all aspects of this life-threatening disease. Now, in this major addition to the bestselling The First Year® series (over 250,000 copies sold), Chilnick shares his story and expert, step-by-step advice for coping with heart conditions. With information on lowering cholesterol, losing weight, reducing stress, and related concerns from high blood pressure to diabetes, this guide is a must-have resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars First hand, first year heart disease, May 7 2009
By Dennis N. Digesare - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The First Year: Heart Disease: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Paperback)
In August 2009 I suffered a mild heart attack. I was scared and clueless on how to learn and understand what had happened to me. After several other book choices I found this book and can say that this book is the one single reference I would recommend. The book will help you understand, what to expect and do (and not do!) from the moment that it happens, day by day, month by month through the first year. The knowledge you will gain will help you work with your doctors on a game plan.

It is an invaluable way to learn and und understand the new life you must to live well. If someone you know has a history, had a recent episode or actual heart attck ... get this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take it from somebody who knows heart disease, Feb 6 2008
By Patricia M. Fernberg "Funbug" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The First Year: Heart Disease: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Paperback)
This is first-hand, I've-been-there, scary-funny experience. You can open the book up anywhere for quick reference or go straight through. This book has everything you need to know: websites, current research, what to do if you're having a heart attack, info about diabetes, diet advice -- even medication and cookbook suggestions. It's not a dry medical book, even though it's loaded with up to date information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide to heart disease, Feb 21 2008
By B. Brody - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The First Year: Heart Disease: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Paperback)
If you, a friend or family member has heart disease, this guidebook gives you everything you need to know to understand the disease. It provides helpful information on the first year of recovery and beyond. I especially liked the summary at the end of each chapter which highlights the most crucial facts in just one sentence.
