Flash, The: The Complete Series (Repackage/Viva)

Amazon.ca

One of the more exciting and atmospheric TV adaptations of a popular comic book series, The Flash benefited from terrific special effects, but lasted only a single year on its network in 1990. The series stuck to the Scarlet Speedster's origins: police scientist Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) is struck by lightning during an experiment, and chemicals splashed on him during the accident give him the ability to move at incredible speeds (note: hardcore comic fans know that this is the origin for the '60s version of the Flash, not his WWII-era identity). The series partnered him with an attractive fellow scientist (Amanda Pays) who assists Barry in his crime-fighting pursuits. Where the show deviated from its source material was its choice of combatants for the Flash--episodes focused on decidedly human villains, like corrupt officials ("Watching the Detectives") and mobsters (Michael Nader played ex-cop turned hood Nicholas Pike in two episodes, including the pilot), and didn't pull in the comic's excellent "rogues' gallery" until the end of the season, when the Trickster (Mark Hamill, who appears in two episodes), Captain Cold (Michael Champion), Mirror Master (David Cassidy!), and a sort-of Reverse-Flash (in the episode "Twin Streaks") made appearances. Sadly, these appearances were too little, too late for the series, which struggled with a high per-episode price tag and a fluctuating time slot (as well as frequent breaking coverage of the Gulf War). But for the Flash faithful, the six-disc set compiles its entire 21-episode run, including the 90-minute pilot. Unfortunately, no extras are included. --Paul Gaita --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This incredible six disc set contains the entire 21-episode short lived run of the much underrated and underdeveloped live-action 90's television series "The Flash". This six disc set put out from Warner Studios is a welcomed addition to my superhero DVD collection and also contains the 90 minute pilot episode. The packaging and disc artwork are well done and even though the discs overlap one another I find them easy to remove and replace in the package.

For comic book fans and Flash purists this 90's live action version resembles the 1960's scarlet speedster and more than anything else it stays true to the character. Struck by lightning during an experiment and doused with all sorts of chemicals police scientist Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) quickly discovers that his metabolism is rapidly changing and he now has the ability to move at incredible speeds. With the aid of a beautiful scientist Tina McGee played by Amanda Pays, Barry Allen AKA "The Flash" learns how to control his new found powers as he turns his efforts to crime fighting in Central City.

Watching this series all over again reminded me why I loved it so much in the first place. The series was full of great set designs, amazing special effects and a solid soundtrack from Danny Elfman. It's no secret that "The Flash" was an expensive show to create each week and a floating time slot by the network pretty much sealed its fate. Where the show also faltered was in its development of villains to combat the Flash and wreak havoc on the citizens of Central City. The show had a more human feel rather than comic book and the rogues gallery of high caliber villains didn't really surface until the show was almost over and by then it was too late.

I watched this series almost in one sitting over the course of a week-end.

It was a fun series... and it offered a great trip back in the early 90s.

This was a great show and I wish it had a longer run. I think it would have done better now with the evolution of superhero TV shows and movies. Not easy to find so get it while you can. You won't be sorry!

The Flash Series is worth watching, some great effects, though dated now. Shipps and Pays do an outstanding job as the main characters. Shipps has a kind of wide eye innocents to his character that plays well against Pays character.
All and all its fun, and a bit cheesey at times, but after all its a comic. To bad this show did not get another season. There a number of powers that had yet to be fully explored. As well as a nice little Love interest that never really went far.
For those into superheroes its a must buy.

This show started off with a similiar theme like the 1989 Batman film. The Dark Knight theme works for The Flash

Well, colour me red-faced. I thought I was buying the first season of the latest series which is great. Somehow my brain shut down and forgot to tell me that the new series would not sell for such a low price! :-) Anyway, this series is pretty good but the DVDs may end up as coasters.
