They don't make them like this anymore!,
This review is from: The Flight of the Phoenix (DVD)
Nominated for two oscars this 1965 drama featured an all star cast of well seasoned Actors as well as several promising new stars. I first watched this movie as a teenager on television several years after it's release. The premise that a crashed airplane could be rebuilt under life threatening conditions was fascinating. What makes this film believable is the excellent scriptwriting by Lukas Heller from the novel by Trevor Dudley Smith and the superb acting by James Stewart, Ernest Borgnine, Hardy Kruger and supporting actors like Dan Duryea and George Kennedy. They don't make them like this anymore but instead produce film around the Stars' personality which coupled with computer enhanced special effects and lots of action tries to make up for the poor direction, bad acting, unimaginative camera work and severe plot holes of the remake. Thankfully Amazon makes the original available for those of us who can remember this obscure film. Never does the film get too carried away with the storyline but utilizes the concept that less is more which makes this story real to us. Throughout all the turmoil and conflict we all cheer on our heroes efforts to conqueror the desert and themselves. I may be old fashioned but as far as I'm concerned nothing is more entertaining than a good story with believable characters. I've always enjoyed the films of Robert Aldrich who knew how to reach his audience on many levels.

A survival film that's both intelligent and exciting,

This review is from: The Flight of the Phoenix (DVD)
Exciting, well made, well acted survival in the desert story with atougher and edgier than usual performance by Jimmy Stewart. Certainly more complex and thoughtful than most disaster/survival films, with some great twists, and a fun ensemble of characters full of intriguing eccentricities. No one character has a monopoly on moral righteousness, and even Stewart's 'hero' is a man with real flaws. A few story points push the bounds of believability or logic, and Aldrich makes one or two silly or dated choices, but it's stayed with me far longer and more powerfully than the vast majority of films in it's genre.

This is a great way to spend two hours, what more can you say. Great cast, stellar performances and a riveting story. One of the Sixties' best films, totally superior to the ridiculous remake.
