5.0 out of 5 stars Mind-boggling Fun, Feb 7 2008

This review is from: The Fourth Dimension: A Guided Tour of the Higher Universes (Paperback)
The subject of the fourth dimension has fascinated me ever since a guest lecture in middle school on the subject. I found a lengthier and more in depth treatment of the subject in the books of P.D. Ouspensky, particularly Tertium Organum and A New Model of the Universe.

In The Fourth Dimension, Rudy Rucker gives both a comprehensive history of thought on the fourth dimension, and an entertaining and lucid explanation of the concepts and implications of the existence of higher worlds. The margins include interesting excerpts ranging from Plato to Wheeler. From literature, philosophy, mathematics, Rucker gathers the many threads of research on the subject. For anyone interested in a layman's introduction to hyperdimensions, and some interesting metaphysical speculation, this is a great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars mind-bending yet fulfilling book, Jan 7 2003

This review is from: The Fourth Dimension: A Guided Tour of the Higher Universes (Paperback)
For all those of you who have questioned your surroundings, this is the perfect book to get you started on a long journey. I read this book over the summer, and it taught me a lot. Not only does Rucker accurately cover the fourth dimension, but it allows your mind to take it other concepts you might have ruled out before. Even though he starts off a little advanced for the beginning reader, it's pretty easy to figure out if you piece everything together. Granted, the end of the book starts to unwind a bit, and the drawings are a little childish, but overall this is one of the best books I've read. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the fourth dimension or concepts beyond their grasp.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Cartoonish Introduction, Sep 24 2001

This review is from: The Fourth Dimension: A Guided Tour of the Higher Universes (Paperback)
Granted, this is a book aimed at the "popular science market" but it's a bit more "popular" than "scientific."

Stephen Jay Gould, David Quammen and Ed Regis (among others) manage to cover complex subjects without resorting to "gee whiz" simplifications and tacky drawings. To be fair, Rudy's subject matter is more obtuse and theoretical than natural history, and his approach is likely driven by that. It just felt a little condescending.
