Book Description

Popular spiritual writer and teacher Jan Frazier shows how to move from emotional and mental turmoil to quiet joy and happiness in The Freedom of Being: At Ease with What Is.

Frazier, the author of the bestselling When Fear Falls Away: The Story of a Sudden Awakening, offers practical and effective suggestions for developing "present-moment" awareness as the key to awakening. Frazier shows how getting caught up in being on a spiritual journey often sustains the illusion of time--specifically some future time when you hope to awaken. But letting go of the idea of the future and staying focused in the present can give you access to a rich life free of suffering.

"When you are hurting, or feeling very unawake, or dissatisfied with yourself, instead of saying 'I've got to change' or 'I've got to get enlightened,' step outside of the whole thing and simply observe your thoughts and feelings -- neutrally, without judgment. This nonjudgmental looking is transformative." -Jan Frazier

Whether you feel stuck in your life, or simply want to suffer less and live more consciously, The Freedom of Being offers a blueprint to make the shift into the present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Direct, honest and very helpful. Oct 4 2012

Jan Frazier's writing is direct, truthful and provides practical approaches for us to use at whatever point we find ourselves.

Too often we think enlightenment is the great cure all to our day to day woes. That if only we were enlightened, we'd magically 'transcend' all that irks us. This book debunks that myth and shows us it doesn't work that way. It asks us to really understand what it is we want, and to look at our clichéd expectations of enlightenment. Depending on what we find, this book then gives a range of insights to assist. Ways of seeing that are freeing - from just getting more comfortable in our lives - all the way up to aiming for enlightenment (whilst all the time stressing that our work can only ever be to prepare the ground for it to arise in its own time).

The essence of Jan's message first got through to me in a talk I downloaded as an mp3 given at Karuna on 25th April 2010 (possibly still available on her web site). This book expands greatly upon what she touched on in that talk.

Jan's wisdom is practical, powerful, caring and relevant. Being so radically transformed herself (the account of which forms her first book), she has approached the subject of enlightenment unhindered by any formal lineage or belief system. She provides a fresh way of looking which only comes from those with an authentic understanding.

So if you have been shopping around and reading all the 'biggies', I strongly suggest you read this lesser known author, as her book's true merit is nothing other than its ability to help you see incisively into where you are, and what you need to do to get free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, clear & concise Sep 5 2012

Having read boatloads of material on awakening, enlightment, nirvana - much of it metaphysical claptrap, it's very refreshing to have a writer like Jan Frazier setting down in understandable language not only the expectations for the goal but also the process itself in such an empathetic, compassionate and helpful manner. Highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't recommend it highly enough! Nov 6 2012

Teachers, especially math teachers, know that some students can draw a complete blank on a lesson; and then, when it's presented from a different angle, the student's eyes light up with understanding and they exclaim "Why didn't you just tell me that in the beginning?!!". That's how I felt reading this book. I've read literally hundreds of other books on the subject of awakening to our true nature, but this one is in a class of its own in regards to direct clarity. If you have any interest in this subject at all, this book is pure gold.
