About the Author

During his distinguished career Arnold Lobel wrote and/or illustrated over 70 books for children. To his illustrating credit, he had a Caldecott Medal book -- Fables (1981) -- and two Caldecott Honor Books-his own Frog and Toad are Friends (1971) and Hildilid's Night by Cheli Duran Ryan (1972). To his writing credit, he had a Newbery Honor Book -- Frog and Toad Together (1973). But to his greatest credit, he had a following of literally millions of young children with whom he shared the warmth and humor of his unpretentious vision of life.

Though he was a born storyteller -- he began making up stories extemporaneously to entertain his fellow second-graders in Schenectady, New York, where he grew up in the care of his grandparents. Mr. Lobel called himself a "lucky amateur" in terms of his writing. Viewing himself as a professionally trained illustrator (he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute), he said, "I know how to draw pictures. With writing, I don't really know what I'm doing. It's very intuitive."

In addition to the Frog and Toad books, Owl at Home, Mouse Tales, The Book of Pigericks, and many other popular books he created, Mr. Lobel also illustrated other writers' texts that captured his fancy. He viewed this as "something different and challenging." Often his illustrations for those books showed a different aspect of his personality and his artistic expertise, ranging from his meticulous dinosaurs in Dinosaur Time by Peggy Parish to his chilling pen-and-ink drawings in Nightmares: Poems to Trouble Your Sleep by Jack Prelutsky, about which Booklist wrote, "Young readers will be amazed that the gentle Lobel of Frog and Toad fame can be so comfortably diabolic."

In 1977 Mr. Lobel and his wife, Anita, a distinguished children's book author and artist in her own right, collaborated on their first book, How the Rooster Saved the Day, chosen by School Library Journal as one of the Best Books of the Year, 1977. They then collaborated on three more books, A Treeful of Pigs, a 1979 ALA Notable Book; On Market Street, a 1982 Caldecott Honor Book; and The Rose in My Garden, a 1984 Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor Book.

Arnold Lobel died in 1987.

3.0 out of 5 stars great books but not a COMPLETE box set Mar 8 2009
Format:Paperback
We received two of the Frog and Toad books last year as a present and our kids (2 year old twins) love the stories. I was excited to see that there were two other Frog and Toad books available and ordered them for us. I also saw that this "Collection Box Set" existed and purchased it at the same time as a Birthday present for a little friend. When the box set arrived, I was surprised and quite disappointed to see that it contained ONLY THREE out of the four Frog and Toad books.

I find it strange that a Collection Box Set should be incomplete. I do not think I would have bought this product if I had known that it contained only three of the Frog and Toad books.

5.0 out of 5 stars These Books Got Me Out of a Tough Spot Feb 17 2013
By John M. Ford TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
When my daughter Katie was small, I called her my "little toad." It seemed harmless and fun. It fit her bouncy, baby personality and made her laugh. All part of the joys of parenting.

One day when she was a little older, we were going through one of those worksheets that has kids classify pictures as real or imaginary. Katie did well. So when we ran out of worksheet I threw in a few of my own. Eventually I asked: "And what about toads?" "Imaginary!" she declared, with great certainty.

Surprised, I probed: "And what is a toad, exactly?" Katie smiled and her eyes took on a dreamy expression. "A toad is like a beautiful fairy princess with wings and beautiful hair and bright-colored dresses!" She beamed at me with the sure knowledge of the beautiful creature that was a toad. That was how her Daddy saw her.

I couldn't let somebody else tell her. Family stories take on a life of their own over time. I did not actually explain that a toad was like a frog, but is ugly, lives in the dirt and can't swim very well. But whatever I did say--I've repressed it--didn't help much. Katie ran to the couch and buried her head under a pillow. Her mother took over the comforting.

I was the worst parent ever.

These books were part of a long campaign to get Katie to like me again. They are friendly, interesting and--important for my purpose--cast toads in a fairly positive light. You can enjoy reading them to your child and enjoy the next stage when your child reads them to you. If used appropriately, they will help your child to have high self-esteem and a positive self image.
