'(The Veiled Detective) is the best Sherlockian mystery novel I have seen all year...I do not hesitate to recommend it' - Classic Specialties

Product Description

A young Sherlock Holmes arrives in London to begin his career as a private detective, catching the eye of the master criminal, Professor James Moriarty. Enter Dr. Watson, newly returned from Afghanistan, soon to make history as Holmes’ companion...

By turns both shocking and exciting, David Stuart Davies’ controversial take on the Holmes mythology is a modern classic in crime fiction that will defy all expectations.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s timeless creation returns in a new series of handsomely designed detective stories. From the earliest days of Holmes’ career to his astonishing encounters with Martian invaders, the Further Adventures series encapsulates the most varied and thrilling cases of the worlds’ greatest detective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astounding and Unexpected!!, Feb 23 2012
This review is from: The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Veiled Detective (Paperback)
I've always been a fan of reading more about Professor Moriarty and this was my chance... In these adventures we can fully witness the breadth and scope of his evil which could be read also as a companion to Doyles' work, all the while turning it on its head!!

An absolute pleasure but most appreciated by fans of Doyles' work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Twist on the Life of Sherlock Holmes, Jan 27 2010
By S. H. - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Veiled Detective (Paperback)
It is difficult to write a helpful review without being a bit of a spoiler. So, if you're a purist, I wouldn't want to ruin the fun for you, so you may want to stop reading now. However, what I reveal is not about the ending. You figure out the stuff I'm about to talk about pretty quickly. So... that said, when I began reading this book it took me a little while to figure out what was happening. We meet a man named John Walker, who bears a striking resemblance to our old friend, John Watson. Eventually, we learn that Moriarty, truly an evil genius with his fingers in every pie, knows of Holmes existence, is fascinated by him, and begins playing with him like a cat plays with a mouse. I cringed as it began to appear that Holmes' entire life was a mirage created and controlled by Moriarty. Enough said, accept to tell you that Holmes lives up to his reputation, Holmes and Watson remain impressive men in this story, and I expect it will pull you in and hold your attention. I enjoyed this book very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging and well-written twist on the Holmes legend..., Jan 10 2010
By Alex "D. Woof" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Veiled Detective (Paperback)
In this "what if" tale of master sleuth Sherlock Homes, author David Stuart Davies proposes: What if almost everything you knew about Holmes and his associates were a carefully-crafted lie orchestrated by the mind of Holmes' nemesis Professor Moriarty? I won't reveal everything here, but it all starts with a disgraced Army doctor named John Walker, who's "given an offer he can't refuse" by the good Professor... who wants to keep young Sherlock from interfering with his criminal plans, but at the same time, relishes the challenge of matching wits with the detective's genius.

What follows is a story which covers at least 3 classic Holmes tales, though NOT as they were written in their original form. Those stories -- it's revealed -- were altered, not only to make Sherlock's adventures more exciting to readers, but also to cover up certain vile crimes committed by Mr. Holmes in his quest for "justice," which would have certainly led him to the gallows!

As a rule, I don't like re-imaginings of classic characters, nor the tendency of many modern writers to "darken" them by having them act in ways alien to their original incarnations, so they seem more "contemporary" to current audiences. However, this is a very well-done pastiche of Conan Doyle's characters and is a fairly quick and entertained read. I easily recommend it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great set-up, poor follow-through, Jun 21 2010

This review is from: The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Veiled Detective (Paperback)
When I first read the premise of this story, I thought it sounded like a fun re-imagining of how Holmes and Watson met. I eagerly read through the first several well-written chapters, excited about where the story was going to go. "Watson" as a reluctant spy for Moriarty? How would he deal with the guilt of betraying the man whom he was increasingly seeing as a friend? What would he do?

Nothing, apparently. After all this great set-up, with hundreds of different ways the story could go - Davies opts to present the readers with "A Study in Scarlet" with only minimal changes. After that we are treated to a rather unbelievable courtship between Watson and Mary (he doesn't seem particularly bothered that his relationship with her is based on a lie). Not to mention the rather pointless character change to Mycroft. In fact, things don't get interesting again until Watson is finally being honest with Holmes and the readers are given a new take (although a slightly cheesy one) on "The Final Problem."

If you're going to change the characters and back-story of Holmes and Watson (and Mycroft) so much, you should at least *do* something with it. Watson never really does the job that Moriarty sent him to do. Personally, I would have liked to see him attempting to mess up Holmes' cases and being terrified of the Great Detective finding him out (regardless of whether Holmes knew the whole time or not). I would have liked to see him wrestling with his conscious about the whole situation. As it is, he mostly ignores it with only occasional thoughts of "hmm, this stinks but oh well."

I think this book could have been fantastic, but unfortunately I found it severely lacking and immensely disappointing.
