Product Description

Product Description

Sherlock Holmes has already encountered the evil young hedonist Edward Hyde, and knew he was strangely connected with Henry Jekyll, the respectable young doctor. It was not until the Queen herself requested it, however, that Holmes was officially on the case of the savage murder of Sir Danvers Crew. Here, then is the account of that devilish crime as recorded by Dr Watson...

4.0 out of 5 stars The Mystery that Even Sherlock Holmes Can't Solve?!, Nov 12 2010

This review is from: The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Holmes (Paperback)
Mr. Utterson arrives at 221B Baker Street to ask Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to for help in the matter of his friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll and the mysterious Edward Hyde. Holmes begins an immediate investigation into the nature of the man Edward Hyde. But even as the duo unearth clues about the strange connection between Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde, it seems like the detective has finally meet a mystery he cannot solve.

I found Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Holmes to be a truly engaging book. Not since David Stuart Davies' The Scroll of the Dead was I so attracted to book in these magnificent series.Loren D. Estlemen does a wonderful job captivating the reader. This book makes me want to read Estlemen's other Holmes novel in which he squares off against Dracula.

My only compliant about this book is that if you know Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, you will know the solution from page 1. However it is still a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Estleman in another genera, Dec 12 2010

The Sherlock Holmes piece done by Loren Estleman is almost completely unlike anything else he has done (and if my memory of the copyright date is correct, it was one of his earliest works). While I have always loved his Detroit novels and the new pieces on California and the movie industry, the Holmes piece is very skillfully written in the manner of Arthur Conan Doyle. I can say he has succeeded in almost perfectly imitating Doyle. I can also say, as an Estleman aficionado, that I favor the more recent works of this author over this rather interesting exercise. However, I salute the dealer who sent it promptly and in perfect condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very close.....as close as you can get.... to "the canon" !, Mar 30 2011
By Robert T. Paige - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Holmes (Paperback)
The author has succeeded very well in capturing the flavor of Doyle's work, in particular the detailed descriptions of various places, persons and scenes in the novel. Although this is admittedly the retelling of a well known story by Robert Louis Stevenson, Estleman has skillfully edited Holmes and Watson into it. There is plenty of action: Holmes is attacked by and subdues a knife wielding thug,Holmes and Watson disguise themselves in a tedious manner and follow Hyde in his nefarious journeys through the dregs of lower London. Holmes, disguised as a Hansom cab driver, exhibits exceptional skills on a further chase of Hyde. It was interesting to follow the path of this chase by charting it on a street map of London, following the twists and turns of the chase. All in all, even if you are a nitpicker about the original tale, this is a fine piece of adventurous reading and one of the best of the pastiches.
