The Future is here!,
By RAS (Vancouver Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Future (Audio CD)
Bought The Future in 1993 and have been playing it recently BECAUSE Leonard's COMING TO TOWN and I HAVE TICKETS!I still think it's an amazing production as are his shows. Totally unique! I bought two albums in 1968: The Beatles' White Album and Songs of Leonard Cohen. I am amazed at my prescience of buying two such brilliant albums and I still cherish the music.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the new Leonard Cohen,
By
This review is from: The Future (Audio CD)
1992's THE FUTURE is to my mind Leonard Cohen's most fascinating and phenomenal work. I was personally bored with his earlier album, and didn't think 1988 I'M YOUR MAN went far enough - although it was a step in the right direction. He abandons the jangled guitar sound for something a million-times more relevant and, thus poignant. It actually feels like he's exploring sonic textures here, rather than just setting his wonderful text to insipid melodies. His prowess with poetry, of course, remains intact. The album begins with "The Future", which contains some very dark imagery indeed. "Closing Time" is a cute and very funny number, while "Anthem" is perhaps his most transcendent spiritual statement outside of his printed work. And who knew Cohen was capable of writing a song as urgent and pulse-pounding as "Democracy," in which he explores his mostly ambivalent feelings about the United States. Cohen's recording work in the last 20 years tends to coincide more with the themes he picks-up on in his written work particularly his controversial novel BEAUTIFUL LOSERS. These include: spiritual groping, perverse-romance and alienation, among others. There's a point off for the under-whelming last three tracks, which quite frankly from a musical standpoint are throwaways.

Songs that penetrate and don't let go,
By Jason P. Kring (Orlando, Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Future (Audio CD)
This was my first Leonard Cohen album and still my favorite. With intelligent lyrics, simple yet intoxicating melodies, and an underlying sensuality, every one of these songs will seep into your conciousness and never leave. From the subtle groove of "Waiting for the Miracle," the infectious "Closing Time," the thought-provoking "Democracy," to the simple beauty of the instrumental "Tacoma Trailer," Cohen takes the listener on a magical journey that you will want to take again and again.
