Review

"This title will leave kids giggling as they follow the sometimes dire consequences of the G-man's efforts to be reunited with his class. . . . This reinvention of a venerable figure is funny to the max."  Booklist, starred review

This book is hysterical! July 25 2011
By Deborah Sandford - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
A class of students bakes a gingerbread man; the teacher calls, "Recess!" and the students race out the door, leaving the gingerbread man behind.

"I'll run and run, as fast as I can. I can catch them! I'm their gingerbread man!"

His misadventures are too funny as he scrambles to find his class.

The rhyming format incorporates the narration, as well as the dialogue of the gingerbread man and the other characters.

I hope this team (Laura Murray, author and Mike Lowery, artist) continue to entertain readers--we need more feel-good, laugh-until-you-cry books!

Gingerbread Man on the Loose July 14 2011
By Alison Jackson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is a fun and original take on an old favorite. Murray's Gingerbread Man is left behind in the classroom and creates all manner of mischief before the children return from recess. The illustrations are simple and childlike, and the cookie's adventures fit perfectly into school and library activities. A must for teachers and caregivers!

"Gingerbread Man Loose in School" is the complete package! It's fun, engaging, full of action, and it has extras - a removable map in the back of the book, and a website with even more ideas. As a teacher, I appreciate its strong use of visual supports and rhyming to increase comprehension for young readers. Laura Murray has immediately become one of my favorite authors, and I can't wait for her next book!

LOVE IT! Oct. 25 2012
By Kerry Lynn K - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book is ADORABLE! I ordered it on a whim from my first grade daughter's Scholastic book order from school. I figured it would be the same boring type story, but I was WRONG! It's adorable, funny, sweet, and so cute. The whole book rhymes, and they are fun, creative rhymes. We've read the book at least 15 times this last week, and both still crack up every single time. I love this little Gingerbread Man, beautiful character development, and fun plot! Thank you for a great book!
Run, Run, As fast as you can! Sept. 13 2011

Each year the kindergarten teachers at my school start the year off with a gingerbread man unit, where the students decorate their own gingerbread man (paper). When I first saw this book, I thought it would be perfect to share when the students came to the library for the first time. The kindergarten teachers give me a gingerbread man that they have decorated with each class, and we pretend that it 'ran' away, (it's really fun to pretend not to know where it came from, I hide it in the book). Well, it turns out the book worked very well. The teachers liked it and the students liked it. And I liked it because (SPOILER) the gingerbread man doesn't get eaten at the end. In addition the book comes with a fun poster, with a maze, coloring page, and lesson ideas on the back. The author's website also has a complete reading guide. I kinda wish that I'd had time to prepare the gingerbread hunt for the students. I think it would have been fun.

Review wise the writing is clear and crisp and reads well out-loud (it does rhyme). The refrain changes slightly as the gingerbread man moves through the school (runs, skips, limps, etc.). The illustrations are really cute and compliment the story beautifully. The format is simplified comic with panels and speech bubbles and a fun font. The emphasized phrases help with reading out loud, the reader knows when to add emphasis. A winner in every way, I highly recommend it.
