Product Description

Review

"Despite the substantial number of Holocaust memoirs that have been published, The Girl in the Green Sweater manages to touch us in an unexpected way, revealing highs and lows in man's capacity for evil, as well his capacity to love life and other human beings.  Through the eyes of the child that Krystyna Chiger was in Lvov, Poland in 1939   we see the whole moral universe." -- Naomi Ragen, author of The Saturday Wife and The Covenant

“[A] gripping memoir. . . Captures both tragic events and beautiful images that continue to haunt the author after more than 60 years.”--Kirkus

“Told from a precocious child's point of view. . . Chiger's seven-year-old cypher possesses a self-awareness that springs from her inner and outer turmoil, capturing well the despair and terror of a life in hiding. With a powerful story and a keen voice, Chiger's Holocaust survivor's tale is a worthy and memorable addition to the canon.”--Publishers Weekly

"An important addition to Holocaust literature that vividly describes a harrowing childhood faced with enormous strength and courage."--Michael Bart, author of Until Our Last Breath: A Holocaust Story of Love and Partisan Resistance

Product Description

True story from the major motion picture "In Darkness," official 2012 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 1943, with Lvov's 150,000 Jews having been exiled, killed, or forced into ghettos and facing extermination, a group of Polish Jews daringly sought refuge in the city's sewer system. The last surviving member this group, Krystyna Chiger, shares one of the most intimate, harrowing and ultimately triumphant tales of survival to emerge from the Holocaust. Originally published as The Girl in the Green Sweater, In Darkness is Chiger's harrowing first-person account of the fourteen months she spent with her family in the fetid, underground sewers of Lvov.

In Darkness is also the story of Leopold Socha, the group's unlikely savior. A Polish Catholic and former thief, Socha risked his life to help Chiger's underground family survive, bringing them food, medicine, and supplies. A moving memoir of a desperate escape and life under unimaginable circumstances, In Darkness is ultimately a tale of intimate survival, friendship, and redemption.

What a great read.

This is a young girls story of the her life and having to hide in the sewer system of her town and wait out the war. When I was reading I felt like I was right there in the sewer with her. It is very well written.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book I will remember for a long time., Mar 22 2012

Johnny Boy "Ivan" (Sudbury, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
I found this book a great read and very telling of a terribly bad time in our history. However a small point which makes me wonder. The forty centimeter pipes mentioned many times are in my opinion not factual.Having crawled through a number of pipes during my career it would be in my opinion impossible for most adults to crawl through a sixteen inch pipe for the suggested kilometers. As well as impossible to back up.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing courage in the face of the SS Nazi's, April 15 2009
By 4fabfelines "Lesa" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Girl in the Green Sweater: A Life in Holocaust's Shadow (Hardcover)
This book was absolutly fantastic. It tells of the story of this families struggle with communist Russia and then the invasion of the German Nazi's in Poland.
The unbelievably cruel acts of the Germans and the SS black guards will break you heart.
She vividly recalls her possesions going to the germans, the lack of food, the hiding places her ingenius father made and the long hours of boredom and fear the family had to face.
When they are finally hunted down like rabbits they escape to the sewers of Lvov.
Dank, terrible and dark, they live in these sewers for over a year, aided by a kind benefactor, a catholic sewer worker.
This is a amazing tale of truth, fear and courage in the face of inbeatable odds.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amazing true Holocaust story, Jan 16 2009
By Zvi Harrel - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Girl in the Green Sweater: A Life in Holocaust's Shadow (Hardcover)
This is an amazing story. The descriptions of life in the Lvov ghetto are just a lead up to the story of survival in the sewers. The conflicts between the group of people hiding, their living conditions and how they were helped (and saved) are given with outstanding detail and honesty. This book is an important document for those interested in the Holocaust.
