Product Description

It's my 40th birthday today and I'm trying to smile, but as I look in the mirror all I can see is an empty shell, someone waiting to die... You could never tell that anything was wrong with me by just looking at me, as I dress clean and I keep myself tidy, and I have a smile on my face that hides my emotions and over the years I've become an expert at hiding behind it" This is the shocking true story of an innocent girl abused by the very people who said they would take good care of her. Lily's family began the path to her destruction - they used her and abused her - but they never ever wanted or loved her. The little girl was also sexually physically and emotionally abused by many people around her who were able to hide behind the security of Ireland's Catholic Church-run institutions. She also suffered at the hands of other people around them who they called their friends. You only get one chance to live your life as a child, but Lilly was never given that chance - her childhood was taken from her before it ever begun. From the age of four, when she was first sexually abused, her life changed forever and when she walked through the institution's doors in Ireland, her life continued along the same path that has destroyed her soul. Her emotional pain is as strong today as it was the day it began and will never leave her alone. "When I go to sleep it's in my head and when I wake up I can see it in the mirror and I am only waiting to die." A child abuse story that will stay with you forever and one that you will talk about for many years to come, The Girl Nobody Wants is a harrowing true story that will appeal to fans of biographies.

I was just so shocked that this poor girl was treated so horrifically where ever she turned.I kept waiting for her to meet someone who would just love her.
I recommend this book to anyone who has anything to do with children in child care positions. These children especially need
extra attention.

3.0 out of 5 stars Change for your boys April 2 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Good book but i hope her boys can grow up and be normal. Things bad happen to young kids and its so sick. How can any one harm a child i dont know. But them kids have to let it go and make the best of there new life esp for there kids so they can grow up and be loving adults and turn in to great parents that there mother or farther never had. The circle needs to be broken!

2.0 out of 5 stars Lily Obrien's Story Dec 7 2013
By Sandy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I hope I am right and this person didn't get slapped in the head so many times by so many people or she would certainly be brain damaged. I may be cynical but something does not ring true. If it is true this woman had the worst childhood ever and I am mistaken and sincerely sorry for her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing, compelling Jan. 11 2012
By C.C.Cole - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I finished this disturbing book yesterday and spent today thinking about it. Two points I'll make up front:

1) I wasn't there, so I see no reason to disbelieve the writer unless some other information comes out.
2) Whether or not the story is true or false, here's a truth: There are people in this world that consider those that cannot help themselves (children, vulnerable adults, animals) a burden and do not care for them as they would someone they love. I've seen and experienced enough in my lifetime to know bad things happen, and the lack of love brings forth such events.

The story is about Lily, who lived with a mother and stepfather in London, and after an assault by a family member, was sent with her brother and sister to live with their father in Ireland. It didn't get much better there, as the father was often away, and the kids suffered neglect. When the community found out, they were taken in by a group of nuns and endured more hardship. When Lily grew up, she finally got away and met a man that loved her and continued to attempt to put her childhood behind her by giving her own kids the love she wasn't given.

Overall this was a compelling read that may turn away the skeptics and bring believers to tears. I liked the story, but sometimes, the truth is too hard for people to bear; so I recommend this story with a warning it's not for the faint of heart. Overall, well done, four stars!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to Read May 4 2012
By impossible girl - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book on my kindle because a friend (who usually doesn't read much) said she LOVED it and that I HAD to read it. I've read some pretty disturbing child abuse stories before, but believe me when I say that readers who couldn't put down books like "A Child Called It" and "They Cage the Animals at Night" won't be enthralled with this particular title.

I found this book hard to read (and I'm a high school teacher who reads my fair share of bad material)--this book jumped back and forth: the author was beaten and then the next paragrah will go on and on about "....why did I suffer this abuse?" Over and over again.

I assume this book was maybe done as part of the healing process and is in journal-format, which is why it jumped around (shaved head on one page and a few pages later, someone is dragging her by her hair). For a healing journal, it wouldn't have to be entirely accurate for the order in which things happened.

If the author had stuck to the storytelling of abuse and told it all as it was and then added a chapter at the end as a reflection to talk about how she felt about it then and now, I think it would have worked much better. A reader would have been horrified by the abuse, which really does sound awful (and shame on those nuns and anyone who looked the other way) but is instead sidetracked by the reflective comments. However, to go from a near-rape in one paragraph to three paragraphs about how no one ever treated her well and she doesn't know why; it just didn't work and left me frustrated as a reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars sad but good, heart braking and disappointing July 1 2013

People stop complaining this is a good, sad book.I'm a 11 year old girl who loves to read and these hateful comments are ridiculous. She already went thru all of this as a child and your adding on top if it.I think she is a really good person and from all the people who read this book i'm the only one who truly cares about her. When i read this i cried.I wish Lily lots of luck and love with her life.xoxox

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well written. Nov. 21 2011
By Colin Reef - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
A lot of people commited suicide who suffered the degree of abuse that Lilly O'brien did. When I compare her story to survivors of the Holocaust I see some similarities: Lilly lived day to day being mentally, emotionally and physically abused. Memories of sexual abuse haunted her every day. But the worst part of Lilly's life is the fact that she was never loved by her own mother, therefore she never had any self esteem. So many people treated her so badly, but no one ever gave her the foundation for her to feel like she was an honourable human being worthy of respect and love.
Lilly though made something great of her life, she raised three children. She also endured the bravery of trying to resolve her feelings.
Last but not least Lilly has done an outstanding job of writing The Girl Nobody Wants.

5.0 out of 5 stars very sensitive writing Dec 7 2013

A perfect case of post traumatic stress disorder and the hell it keeps one in. Instead of blood in your veins you have terror. Her daily struggles can only be understood by another PTSD survivor. Please know that you are not alone. Sincerely, fran and her sister Kay.
