Book Description

A killing virus has swept the earth, sparing only children through the age of twelve. There is chaos everywhere, even in formely prosperous mid-America. Gangs and fierce armies of children begin to form almost immediately. It would be the same for the children on Grand Avenue but for Lisa, a ten-year-old girl who becomes their leader. Because of Lisa, they have food, even toys, in abundance. And now they can protect themselves from the fierce gangs that roam the neighborhoods. But for how long? Then Lisa conceives the idea of a fortress, a city in which the children could live safely and happily always, and she intends to lead them there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting, Sep 5 2007

This review is from: The Girl Who Owned A City (Paperback)
I had to read this book in grade 8 (9 years ago) and let me tell you, I was able for the first time to finish reading it. It captured me right from the beginning and didn't let go until the end.

I trully recommend this book, especially to a teacher who wants to capture their students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever, Oct 1 2004
By
Yati (United States) - See all my reviews
This book, is possibly, the most, ...powerful book I have read. I do not know why people might say it was bad. However, to answer perhaps one of the mysteries, the effects of the plague might be that it deteriates the body inside out, like the effects of Ebola.
Some of the most interesting things are that, this plaque. Lisa, is perhaps the most resourceful lass I have ever read about, whether in fiction or non-fiction.
I would like people to know, that, people, kids like us, could learn from this book. It is very powerful, pull of meaning, and anticipation, and perhaps the most valued lesson of all-To appreciate what we have and to work for it.
I must say, two thumbs up to the book, and two thumns up to O. T. Nelson. Congrats for the outstanding book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kids as Leaders, May 5 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Girl Who Owned A City (Paperback)
The Girl Who Owned A City is a good book. I have some likes and dislikes however. I did like that the people in the book are very adult. You have to remember that all of the people died over the age of 12 because a virus swept the earth. A girl named Lisa took over the city. The children all began to know how to take care of each other. I also liked how Lisa punched the commander of another army and beat him up. This showed her courage and leadership. What I didn't like was that it left the reader hanging. I want to know what happened next.
