This Diet Works!,
By
This review is from: The Glycemic-Load Diet Cookbook: 150 Recipes to Help You Lose Weight and Reverse Insulin Resistance (Paperback)
Although this is billed as a cookbook and predominantly consists of recipes, there is enough information about the theory behind the diet itself that you can get started right away. The author makes a very valuable distinction between glycemic LOAD and glycemic INDEX that anyone with a concern about blood sugar (or any health concern, in fact) levels needs to read. If you want to eat well and abundantly and are not ready for a vegetarian or raw food diet, this diet could be the one for you. It is a diet that you can easily stay on the rest of your life. You need never be hungry and you can actually ENJOY eating while watching your weight drop off at the same time. Truly, if I had known about this way of eating 30 years ago, I would have saved myself years of yo-yo diet suffering! This diet simply consists of completely avoiding all sugary drinks, including 100 percent fruit juices. It also involves avoiding almost all beans/grains/starches.sugars. At first, the THOUGHT of giving up my daily bowl of oatmeal was something I could barely entertain. Once I started eating eggs and steamed vegetables for breakfast and enjoying not being hungry till noon, seeing the weight drop off, watching my cravings for sweets disappear, I started looking FORWARD to my eggy breakfast. I am NOT an egg person, nor have ever been, but it seems like as soon as you stabilize your blood sugar levels, your cravings disappear and your tastes begin to change. I cannot stress this enough: most people are psychologically addicted to their grains (rice, potatoes, cereals). When you consider, as mentioned so insightfully in this book, that by themselves, potatoes, rice, oatmeal, bread and the like are virtually tasteless until we pile other stuff on top of them, this all starts to make sense. What makes this diet bearable and even enjoyable for me is that I can eat dairy -all that I want. So a bit of goat cheese in my omelete (which co-author Dana Carpender tells you how to make effortlessly) makes it delicious. Butter and some herb seasoning or parmesan cheese on my steamed asparagus makes for a wonderful satisfying meal. Cooking in the morning is not something I usually did (except for oatmeal) but it is amazing how quickly you can change your daily habits so that you can almost steam your veggies without thinking. If you have a sweet tooth, there are many ways to enjoy sweet treats with low glycemic loads so that you will not feel deprived. The authors recommend Splenda. I myself prefer to use all-natural Stevia or Xylitol.Dr. Rob Thompson, who wrote the original "Glycemic Load Diet" and Dana Carpender, who engagingly presents the easy and yummy recipes do a fantastic job of getting you started quickly and relatively painlessly on a diet that can truly save your life, save you money, give you energy, help you drop weight. I promise, if you give it just one week of eating all you want within the guidelines, you will start to think of this diet as a 'miracle' diet.

The Glycemic Load Diet Cookbook,
By
This review is from: The Glycemic-Load Diet Cookbook: 150 Recipes to Help You Lose Weight and Reverse Insulin Resistance (Paperback)
This book is great!!! Rob Thompson explains Insulin Resistance (Pre-diabetes) very well, the recipes are easy to make and each one I have tried so far both my husband and myself have enjoyed. I suffer from a mild form of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and since Insulin Resistance is the underlying cause this book has helped me a great deal. A lot of my symptoms that I was having due to my insulin resistance are now gone and I have way more energy than ever before!! I would highly recommend this book for anyone who would like to lose weight or just feel better overall.

Wow! I've been following a low GL diet for the past couple months, and this book has easily proven to be the best resource to making this diet easy. Just the substitutions in this book are enough to make it the best, but there's also tons of great recipes!
