Review

Reviews of previous editions: 'Neill Nugent has once again supplied us with a definitive textbook on the institutions and politics of the European Union. However it is much more than this. It is an essential reference book for both the academic and practitioner... [and] a masterful effort at explaining the inexplicable and at making the opaque transparent.' - Political Studies 'The book is well organized, well researched, and clearly written. It answers almost every factual question that the undergraduate is likely to ask about the existing organizational structure of the Community, and the judgements that the author offers from time to time are invariably sound and sensible.' - Government and Opposition 'Nugent manages throughout to convey the complexity of the EC system without confusing the reader. In short, it is an excellent book with which it is difficult to find fault.' - West European Politics '...this is by far the best teaching text on the European Community that I have come across.' - Journal of Common Market Studies 'Thanks to its comprehensive structure, accurate and systematic approach to untangling the complexities of integration processes and structures, and insightful evaluvation of policy outcomes. It remains an invaluable reference for students, scholars and practitioners alike.' - Boyka Stefanova, Perspectives on Poltical Science Journal --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, but pretty bland!, Jun 23 2001
By
Virginia Hawthorne (Baltimore, MD United States) - See all my reviews
I recently read this book for a European Politics Today class, and the teacher warned us ahead of time that it would be "hellish." It wasn't exactly hellish, but it definitely doesn't excite the reader like A Wider Europe by Michael Baun. For a pretty detailed overview of the history and workings of the European Union, this book could not be better, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first book to understand the EU!, Nov 16 2005
By Reynold Pereira - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Government & Politics 5th Ed-P (Paperback)
For anyone wanting to get a first taste of what the EU is all about, this is a 'must read' book. The contents have been carefully categorised such that the reader is gradually introduced to the various facets of the EU. I must add though that some of the topics do not go deep enough but perhaps the real aim of this book is only to get you on the right track in your journey to find out more about the EU. But nevertheless 'chapeau'.
