Book Description

April 2005
An enthralling and hard-hitting story of violence and revenge from No. 1 bestselling author Martina Cole.Looking back, Nick Leary couldn't say exactly what kept him awake that night. He'd had a lot on his mind; perhaps he'd been thinking about the 'respectable' Essex business that he ran, or about his two young sons sleeping in the room next door. Or was it simply the sound of his beautiful wife's steady breathing beside him...Whatever it was, he was awake when he heard someone's footsteps downstairs, and Nick's instinct was to fight. It had always been that way, to protect the things he treasured most: his family, his privacy, his reputation. He'd grafted for these things all his life and no one was going to jeopardise them now. Unless, of course, Nick's instinct is wrong, and what happens this time is the start of something even he cannot stop...

Review

'Cole is brilliant at portraying the good among the bad, and vice versa, so until the very end we never quite know who to trust. This is the very stuff that makes her so compelling' -- Daily Mirror 'No one writes about East End women and their vagaries like Martina Cole' -- Maxim Jakubowski, Murder One 20020329 'A powerful novel that pulls no punches... Cole has an ear for the vernacular of the East End, as well as an ability to portray the viciousness of life at the edge' the Guide -- Guide 20020329 'Right from the start [Cole] has enjoyed unqualified approval for her distinctive and powerfully written fiction' -- The Times 20020329 'Intensely readable' -- Guardian 20020329 'Martina Cole explores the shady criminal underworld, a setting she is fast making her own' -- Sunday Express 20020329 'Utterly compelling' -- Mirror 20020329 'The story will grip you from the first pages' -- Best 20020329 'Gritty novel from an author who knows intimately the world she writes about' -- Express 20020329

If your of a sensitive nature don't read this as its fairly sexually graphic.
The story is great though a typical Martina cole story where you fall for a man that seems decent but always has something to hide.
The characters are great esp tyrell the Clarke brothers tammie and nick.
And as per usual there are lots of twists to the plot.
The story of Jude also gives a realistic insight as to what a heroin addict will do for their fix using everybody and everything to get their fix and really gives and insight into what runway children have to do to keep themselves alive, I found that part tough to read but it was dealt with in a very sensitive and realistic way
All in all a very good read
1.0 out of 5 stars A poor effort Jun 7 2006

There's nothing better than settling down on a winter's night with a good thriller, but this isn't it. From a promising start this book degenerates into flabby writing, cliched and unbelieveable characterisation and a plot that moves at a snail's pace. I couldn't finish it, and don't know if I will read another of Ms Cole's efforts. Disappointing.
