Book Description

May 1 2009
It is said that Canada's birth as a nation took place on the battlefields of the Western Front in World War I. At places like Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele soldiers attacked from the trenches representing home provinces such as Quebec, Alberta, and Ontario, and returned as proud and triumphant Canadians. Canon Frederick George Scott was a witness to the whole of this transformation. A chaplain of the Canadian Corps from the beginning of the war to its end, Canon Scott’s account is a breathtaking and heartbreaking memoir of one of the greatest wars in history, the Canadians who fought in it, and the birth of a nation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Padre's Experience of the Great War Dec 8 2010
By Garth
Format:Paperback
Canon Scott has a rare insight into the human side of the enormous struggle that took place on the battlefields of northern France and Belgium. He 'lived' with his fellow Canadians in the trenches and rest areas, and saw them in a very personal way. His observations on and reaction to the human drama help the reader to glimpse the mind set of the soldiers who put their lives and well being to great risk for their cause, and who accepted the sacrifice they could be called on to make. He was not a detached observer, a fact that is underscored by the death in battle of his son and his reaction to it.
Scott's descriptions of places such as Ypres, and lesser towns and villages before the shelling, allow us to see them as they were when the troops first arrive, and to follow their destruction. It fleshes out the physical setting.
Last, I believe it provides insight into the meaning of the poem, In Flanders Fields, that was so significant to the men in the trenches and indicative of their outlook.
It is an excellent companion to the Tim Cook series on the Canadian Expeditionary Force, which perforce concentrates heavily on the military aspects. Readers may also want to also acquire and read 'Ghosts Have Warm Hands', by Will R. Bird.

This book was written by a British Minister stationed at the Western front during World War I. As a padre, he was able to move about the trenches tending to the soldiers who needed his care. The book is a unique view on World War I, but it does not fail to present all the everyday horrors of trench living. Worth the read.

This book is the recollections of a clergyman who served with Canadian troops in the trenches of World War I. He was wounded and invalided out just before the Armistice.

The writing is a bit tedious, based on a repetitious account of his many daily experiences. However, it does give a feeling of what it must have been like "on the front". And amid all these daily experiences are some jewels -- such as his tale of his leave in Italy at the time the Italian lines broke and all was havoc.

More importantly, this book expresses the feelings of the author's day. Despite the horrors of the war, there is a larger (and more important) understanding of the issues that were at stake. It seems naive to us today, but our current attitudes would undoubtedly seem amoral and our thinking lethargic to someone of the author's time and experiences.

Aside from what this book teaches us about the author's time, it also makes the reader question what we know of our own.
