Product Description

Robert Smythe Hichens (1864-1950) was an English journalist and novelist. Born in Speldhurst in Kent, he was educated at Clifton College, the Royal College of Music, and the London School of Journalism. He wrote lyrics for music, stories, and collaborated in successful plays. He is best remembered now, perhaps, for his satire on Oscar Wilde, The Green Carnation (1894). His novels that were made into films are The Garden of Allah (1905) and The Paradine Case (1933). Amongst his other works are: Flames (1897), The Prophet of Berkeley Square (1902), The Woman with the Fan (1904), The Call of the Blood (1906), The Spell of Egypt (1908), A Spirit in Prison (1908), Bella Donna (1909), The Dweller on the Threshold (1911), The Way of Ambition (1913), In the Wilderness (1917) and December Love (1922).

4.0 out of 5 stars delightful, April 28 2005
By Penelope McLeod "Pen" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Green Carnation (Paperback)
I found the story and subtle yet obvious revelations of the green carnation to be a tantalising glimpse into the subtlety of sexuality in the eighteen hundreds. I recommend it as indolent, decadent and a complete delight for any one interested in an insight into the lives of Oscar Wilde and Alfred Douglas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid parody of Wilde and Douglas, April 26 2012
By othoniaboys - Published on Amazon.com
It is unfortunate that the fun of this book was spoiled by the tragedy that followed in the lives of Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, causing the author to withdraw the book. I feel that Neil McKenna in his biography of Wilde goes too far in blaming Hichens for Wilde's downfall and for portraying Hichens as self-loathing. This book is an hilarious satire on Wilde and Douglas, full of insider knowledge based on the author's friendship with them. He catches the tone and lilt of Wilde's style to perfection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supurb!, Feb 8 2011
By T. Goad - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Green Carnation (Paperback)
I first became aware of this lovely and witty book in excerpt as part of a collection of Decadent writings. I am delighted to finally have received a complete copy. I have just finished reading it through and I am delighted. I don't have any great insight into this light and lovely work. It is not an intellectual work, nor an in-depth examination of the heart = only a bubbly flute of champagne in which to decadently bathe. (however, you may wish to trade the champagne for a lovely, green glass of absinthe.)

Read this charming book aloud in the orchid house of your local botanical gardens. By all means, wear a green carnation while reading.

For a companion volume, try "Against the Grain" or Wilde's own "Salome'" or "The Woman Covered in Jewels".
