Product Description

Product Description

Inspired by Thomas Carlyle's translation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's fairy tale, this play is about a group of people who live in a world turned upside down. They realize that the efforts of one alone can do little to create a new society. But by waking up to each other, they bring about profound and spiritual renewal. Marjorie Spock's "Art of Goethean Conversation" shows how true conversation has tranformative power. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rosicrucian Fairy Tale, May 9 2007
By Mark Newbold - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily (Hardcover)
Steeped in symbolism both evident and obscure, haunting to the memory and both quaint and noble in its imagery is Goethe's miniature masterpiece of a fairy tale in the German romantic tradition. This is a tale that must be worked with, a superficial reading will find the tale tedious and pointless by the average reader. To those that appreciate the western esoteric tradition there is much food for thought here. In many ways I think of this as Goethe's "Magic Flute"- a Rosicrucian, possibly Masonic inspired fable for personal transformation. Marjorie Spock's (sister of the famous Dr. B. Spock of child rearing fame) work, "The Art of Goethean Conversation" is a set piece to a greater understanding of this fable. Enobled human speech, deeds and thoughts are keys to transforming society.

Though appreciated for many years by Anthroposophists and other students of Rudolf Steiner's thought, this work will never find broad appreciation. But if it serves to introduce one to the genius that was Goethe, then its esoteric intention has been fulfilled.
